I was just checking to see if you were transferring any livestock or starting fresh.

As for a return pump something like a Mag 3 or 5 or equivalent, I think you want to have 3 to 5 times your display volume going through the sump minus head. Someone correct me on that.

I just bought a Mag 7 and love it. It's plumbed through a SCWD to my 29. I'm still setting up the tank so that's all i've got for flow. I'll take a pic later and show you. Tell me how you like the Tunze Nano's, I'm going to be picking two up soon.:)

I think a mag 7 will be too much. I am of the school of thought that a return pump is simply that, a return. It should not be used for flow. High flow through your sump will cause micro bubbles in most cases. Flow can be achieved through PH or closed loop.

I have a 140g display and 45g sump with a Mag 9.5 at a 5ft head. It has to be throttled back...

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

purebullet417
12/22/2006, 10:50 PM
so you would say a mag 5 i couldnt decided between the 2 im not realy using it for flow eaither i have tunze for that i think im gana go with the 5 anyway just because i found one cheep

Saldarya

I am currently running a 30G Oceanic cube with a Mag as the return pump, plumbed externally. IMO, it is the perfect size for what you want. By the time you lose the vertical head, then add in any 90 degree turns, you will end up around 350-400 gph. A good pump, and I think the Mag 5 will be a bit to small for you long term.

Good luck with the tank!!

u see the way i have it set up i will not realy be using elbows but all flex tubing but i guess i can get a mag 7 and just use a ball valve to turn it down ill have to decided heres one last bump till tomorrow when i update

gkarshens
12/22/2006, 11:33 PM
I would go with the 7. As you said you can always turn it down, but you can't turn a 5 up.

Cprowler
12/23/2006, 12:21 AM
Have you figured how much water your sump will hold?

A Mag 5 at 4" of head is 310 and nearly 7 times your display per hour. So every hour you will have 310 g going through that little sump. I think that will cause some issues like micro bubbles.

If it were me I would be looking at the Mag 3, 270 @ 4' and only 45 watts of heat not 70w like on the Mag 7. Thats still 6 times display turnover.

I'm interested in what Melev's take on this is.

melev
12/23/2006, 12:28 AM
The Mag 5 would be fine for this application as a return pump. Use 1" plumbing on the 1/2" outlet of the pump.

purebullet417
12/23/2006, 10:42 AM
see i cant use 1" plubing because all the plumbing is under the stand and it has to be 3/4 will a mag 5 be fine at 3/4 pipe at 4 feet

You can use 1" all the way up to the bulkhead and then reduce. 3/4" will work, but you simply get less flow. I don't believe putting a Mag 7 in its place would make a difference, as you are still restricting the pipe.

Odds are the Mag 7 would run a tad hotter, and would consume more electricity too.

update i bought a bunch of stuff today and got a mag 5

affableamerican
12/23/2006, 05:24 PM
I have the same setup. Go with the mag5 -- plenty of return action for ya. I love the setup as well. I ended up gutting the sump and creating a fuge on one side with the skimmer on the other side. Unfortunately, this left little room on the skimmer side, so I had to go with an undersized skimmer (CSS65). Bad move on my part. Let me know how the CSS125 fits -- pics if possible. I'm thinking of switching my 65 out for the 125, and I'm curious to see how much space it will take up in that tiny 15g sump! :)

I have been toying with buying this tank as of now i have the 24g aquapod on a oceanic 30 gallon cube stand. Do you recomend the tank, and what kind of stands do they have available for them?

affableamerican
12/23/2006, 05:46 PM
I'd definitely recommend it, if you are looking for tanks in this range. It's a quality build.

I don't know about stands, as I, like the OP, purchased the tank/stand/sump/plumbing as a complete setup. Some issues I have with the stand though are the glass doors (my fuge light means you see all the eqpt. underneath), and it *is* a tight fit in there, but nothing a little planning can't handle.

You too. Are you making water over the holidays?

Avast Marine
12/24/2006, 02:05 PM
You are looking for a "bushing" in the plumbing department. If you are planning on this for your mag, you need: from pump -> 1/2" fpt to 1" fpt bushing -> 1"mpt to 1" hosebarb adapter -> hose -> 1" mpt to hosebarb adapter -> 1" fpt to 3/4" to (either slip or mpt depending on if your bulkhead is threaded or slip).

Lowes has better plumbing supplies in my area. HTH

purebullet417
12/24/2006, 04:25 PM
what do you guys think i should do for bottom flow in my tank do realy need to add a ph at the bottom of the tank or will the mag 5 return and 2 nano streams be enough

Lunchbucket
12/25/2006, 11:18 AM
i'd think that would be plenty of flow.

you could always put a maxijet or a modded maxijet in the back pointing left to right so you don't get much settling back there

Lunchbucket

xtm
12/25/2006, 11:44 AM
If I were to do this kind of setup, I'd go with a Mag 9.5 going to a SCWD split into two sea swirls... this way you'll have the left-right motion and on-off action.. but that's just me :D maybe a Mag9.5 will cause too much heat for a system that small..

Looks excellent!

what fish are you thinking about?

affableamerican
12/26/2006, 12:48 AM
Yeah, curious about your stock plan as well. In the same tank, I'm going with a maroon clown and a starry blenny. I may add another tough, small fish, like a Ps. fridmani or maybe a couple blue-green chromis. But that will be pushing it, esp. when they mature.

Given that it's a cube, there isn't a lot of room to work with unfortunately.

Retzius
12/26/2006, 05:05 PM
I will have almost the same tank, mine is a 24x24x18 cube. I was also wondering what return pump would be good and was looking into getting some tunze nanos. I just posted a q on tunze forum about a similar tank.

Anyhow, not trying to jack your thread but post pics cause Id like to see it b/c everything sounds and looks good so far. Good job.

affableamerican
12/27/2006, 11:56 AM
Pure -- You might want to consider ways to get good flow on the right and left back corners. When I first put rock in mine, I was getting a ton of detritus build-up in those back corners, and that was with two MJ1200s and my return. Those back corners are tough to get flow to. Right now, I've got one ph pointed straight down into one corner and one exit of my teed return pointing straight down into the other.

And regarding your sump question, I'm not sure what you are saying. Do you mean that you want to set up the 15g with a fuge area, then a skimmer area and then a return area? Is there enough room in the 24" length to do three compartments? I'm rearranging mine when my new skimmer gets here (started with the CSS65 and am quickly moving to an Octopus NW-110), and I am considering doing it like this -- skimmer compartment, baffles, fuge/return area. But I don't know if there will be issues with putting my return pump in the same area as the fuge. At the very least, I will be returning more pods into my MT for my starry blenny to munch on.

purebullet417
12/27/2006, 02:49 PM
iv got some killer nano streams so i think ill be allright with the flow in the corners and if not i have an idea about what to do

No, silicone won't work with acrylic. Take some time to read the DIY pages on my site to learn more, if you like.

Andrew

You need to use weld-on for arylic. Silicone won't hold. ( I found this out on a DIY skimmer I made. :D )

I used silicone on acrylic baffles in my sump. It ran for a year with no problems. Silicone is hard to use to keep acrylic water tight. I have used it on my acrylic external overflow and no leaks yet in over a year. If you sand the surfaces of the acrylic that you are going to silicone to it adheres better. Try at your own risk.

purebullet417
12/28/2006, 03:47 PM
ill use it cause my other one has been in operation for about 4 months so well see how it works and if it leakes its in a tank so it dosent realy matter is ge silicone 1 WITHOUT all the mold stuff reef safe

Avast Marine

the silicone is actually stickiing to the glass in a baffle situation. It's like a sandwich with acrylic instead of bologna.

purebullet417-Nice tank. I saw your setup in Pets Warehouse last Tuesday when I ordered myself a tank as well. On Thursday I went back to pickup my tank and saw yours had a sold sign on it and I thought to myself, who is the lucky dog? Now I know who it went to.

It really was a hot looking tank and stand. For some reason, Oceanic has zero information on their website about the "Tech Tanks". I ended up with a Oceanic "Contrast Collection" 40 gallon stretch hex.

Good luck with yours, Im assembling pics myself and will start my own post soon.

You can use silicone if you are sure it is the safe one, or you can just buy a $5 tube of Aquarium Sealant at Home Depot in the glues section if you are worried.

well because i like your tank so much i have decided to go with the 75gallon model from my lfs . my qustion ::: do you think 2 250watt mh over top would be over kill. it will be all sps tank..

purebullet417
12/29/2006, 08:33 PM
i love hearing people say i loved this tank so much i bought myself one or the same kind lol a 75 gallon tanks footprint is 48x18x20 correct??? if so then i would say 2x250 for an all sps tank would be very nice not overkill but not underrated im not sure if 150 or 175 would be good for things at the bottom good luck and post pics or a thread once u get it up

purebullet417

As long as it stays dry, it'll be fine. I had my ballast (IceCap) screwed to the back of the canopy on my 55g, where it never would get wet.

Lpsfanatic338

My Euro RS-80 fits into a 15g sump and i also have a refugium section, baffles and the return section. The RS-100 would also fit pretty well

You should read other threads and participate in those. Typically one thread isn't like a chat session, but rather a discussion about a specific topic. In your case, it is about your 45g that you are setting up. Since you've not done anything newsworthy, your thread is quiet for now.

You can learn a lot from many threads. I'm subscribed to over 2500 threads here on RC.

quick question if i fill the tank up halfway do you think that will be good to offset the amount of rock going in i want to be able to add salt as soon as i can get the rock so i gata make sure i dont put to little or to much water in as it will displace it

melev
01/09/2007, 03:26 PM
Are you going to add sand too? Any displaced water will go into the sump, I'd imagine.

purebullet417
01/10/2007, 05:34 PM
the tank is an oceanic tech series tank and i think they come standard with starphire and overflow this way and i think they have cherry and yes it is the reg model 1 sump and pm i would like to keep the price as privite as possable

Did you say they put that on there for the light? Won't the light sit on the edge without the euro bracing? It kinda looks like a piece of cut acrylic that is just laying on the top. Did you paint the back or did they? A really nice setup. What type of lighting is that? PC? You got to get a MH for that thing. The colors will look amazing with that starphire glass.

purebullet417

01/14/2007, 04:11 PM
let it run for awhile, its probably just breaking in

robster
01/14/2007, 05:31 PM
I agree. Let it break in. If that doesn't fix it just put a filter sock on the discharge of the skimmer. That take care of the micro bubbles.

Looking good. You need to take a pic with the lights on.

purebullet417
01/14/2007, 09:44 PM
yeah unfunuently due to the space constraints this was the only way possible to do the skimmer i think once the skimmer breaks in ill do a mod and have the exit of the skimmer come out in the refigium to stop the bubbles

how bout an update of ur uncles tank

robster

Pure, I think I am going to order your tank and stand less the light and sump. I have a 37 Oceanic today which is the same size tank just 2" shorter in height. Therefore my custom canopy will fit on top and am hoping my custom sump will fit underneath. I have a couple of questions about your tank. Did it come with a painted black back or did you paint it? What are the inside dimensions of your stand? I am hoping my 15" x 18" sump will fit into one of the three doors. Also, what is that little white circle on the bottom of the tank that I see in the first pics on page 1? It looks like a hole in the stand with something white underneath.

warr-next time im there ill snap some pics
robster-this tank is defently good i would recomend it to anyway for your canopy you just have to make sure it will clear the little lip on the tank witch you could proboly sand down the inside of your canopy the 1/8 of an inch if you need to...as for you sump i measured and 15inchs wont fit its to wide...the tank is supported in the corners so it sticks out into the stand a little more making only a 14 inch space usable front to back and about 20 inches long...i dont see anything in the first pick like your talking about but if your talking about the second pic on the right side of the tank thats just a reflection of the high hat lighting in my room if you put the picture you talking about up in a post and circle or point out what your talking about id be more then willing to answer any more questions

anyway no updates for today

Thanks Pure. That must be a reflection I am seeing. Bummer on the stand size. I wonder if I could just drill holes into my stand for the overflow plumbing to drop through. Does the back of your tank come black or did you paint it? I'm pretty sure my canopy will fit because it just barely lays on the outer rim of the tank I have now. See pics in link below. I was thinking I would just paint it black or if I go with my stand leave as is. The dimensions of my tank are the same as yours. Yours is just 2" taller.

sorry i forgot to post about the back of the tank it comes black but it dosent seem to be painted more like tinted...wow that stand is beautiful if you want to use the stand i can measure out for you where you would need to drill the holes or make a cutout for the plumbing if you want just ask

Will you measure the width between the frame on the door? Basically, I'm trying to figure out the largest sump that will fit through the front or side doors. My Oceanic dealer told me the inside dimensions of the stand are 23L x 14.5W x 30.5H. This is just a tad smaller than my inside stand size 21L x 16W. My door opening appears to be much wider than yours. I really like how you can access the sump on three sides.

purebullet417
01/19/2007, 05:43 PM
id say the biggest you could side perfetly straight through one of the side doors would be 13 inchs because of all the posts jutting out if you want ill take a pic for you and yes the three sides is realy cool

robster
01/19/2007, 06:42 PM
Only 13" huh. Bummer. I take it that the front door is smaller than the side doors?

Post some pics of your tank with the lights on....

Is the flow good with both of the Tunze Nano's or is it blowing up a sand storm?

purebullet417
01/19/2007, 08:03 PM
yes the front door is a little smaller and you wouoldnt be able to menover a tank through it
as for the nano streams it took a little adusting but now theres no sandstorm
as for pics here u go sorry there a lil blurry i just got finished working on the tank and the top of the tank looks much bluer then it dose in real life

Looks really good. Be careful with that glass. I've learned the hard way that glass scratches alot easier than I ever thought it would If you have one of those magnetic glass cleaners check it daily for little grains of sand that get wedged into the the cleaner. One grain of sand can do some serious damage. I really like that little ledge on the bottom. A perfect spot for a piece of sun coral.

Looks good Ray. What size sump is that. It looks big. I assume you are going to plumb it through the wall into the room to the right of the tank where the door leads? Did you cut the acrylic baffles yourself? Do you plan on putting a fuge after the three baffles?

Why do you say it won't work? I could swear I've seen lots of people do this with silicone. Also, what is the difference in this and an acrylic overflow sealed to the inside of a glass tank?

d4a2n0k
01/22/2007, 08:23 PM
If you're generous with the silicone, it will hold acrylic to glass just fine. Ive done a few sumps like this with no problem and they've held for years. Never use acrylic with silicone if you are actually holding water with it. There is only one glue for that and thats Weld-On.

One other thing. Make sure the acrylic is not touching the glass on any side. I see in the picture that you have cut the acrylic too big. Leave about 1/4" on all sides and seal it up with silicone. Acrylic actually soaks up water over time and can expand which in turn can break the glass.

i have a glass sump with acrylic siliconed into it and it seems to be working fine just apply a good amount of it then then let it dry and d4a2nok did you ever figure out what your going to do about your tank

Yes, I will be adding my own pics to your thread if you dont mind in a few days. I have the 45 tech tank on order!

The downside is that I have to sell my new Deltec MCE600 as now I will have a sump. Im going to pickup the Bubble Master 150 to replace it though, if I can get my hands on one. For flow Im going to get a small return pump and use the 2 x Tunze 6025 Streams from my stretch hex. For light, my 24" Maristar 1 x 250w HQI and 2 x 24w T-5 from my stretch hex will also be used.

Lunch , i know you have been around for a while . with that being said it suprises me that you would think that it would not work .. if you mean that it wont bond with the acrylic you are 100% correct . if you think it wont keep them in place then you are wrong . go tothe king of sumps MELEV's site and look at the basic diy for a aga aquarium sump / refugium .. sorry to say but the acrylic is siliconed in place and working fine.. i did not have the time to run aroudn and find a glass shop to cut them to fit ..

ray22
01/23/2007, 08:10 AM
robster,, it is a aga 30 gal 36" long . i do plan on putting a small refugium after the baffles and making the return area a little smaller . and i am going to stuff the sump in the closet . :) i will have more pics to come.

One question purebullet417, is there supposed to be a cover for the overflow box? I seem to remember your tank had a black acrylic cover over the overflow. Mine didnt come with one though...

Thanks ZacharyTrimble!
