I have one for you guys, I have some live rock curing tanks and today I checked one to find almost like an oil slick on top. the water was Grey and smelled like sulfur. After inspecting my rock I discovered that wherever there was not coraline algae the rock had turned completely black and Grey I did have a mag 3 in the tank for circulation and a ebo jager heater.now what I'm curious about is if anybody has heard of a magdrive pump ever leaking out any oil or having liverock excrete anything similar?

Please help as I am stumped

I've seen a couple tanks that went bad after a power outage and as stuff died it turned black and there was a nasty film on the water. My vote is for liverock die off.

The strange thing is the rock has been in the tank for a month then all of a sudden, surprise!

The sulfur smell is what you find sometimes on uncured rock but after a month I would think it would be gone, Have you been doing water changes to keep the ammonia to a safe level as it cures.? If your not monitoring it well you could end up with a bunch of dead rock.
I'm still guessing thats not the pump but you could pull it apart and inspect it for cracks/leaks

Mags should not leak oil from the casing, ever. I think Rio has the monopoly on that one, lol.

Any chance the flow got so low that you have a big die off in the curing tank? Also sometimes bad bacterial growths can cause a skin on the top of the water.

Good luck
