So I just finished setting up my 180G in wall, my sump is composed of a 37G and 30G, so total gallons is 247G.

I guess guidelines are 5 watts per gallon, but this means 4X 300 Watt heaters, seems like overkill and since the sump isn't completely full, then maybe only 3 are needed, possibly 2 300W.

thoughts?

Any reccommendations on a good heater? I was looking at those titanium ones with the external controllers, anyone use those?

Thanks!

depends on how much the tank is fluctuating. Run one 300watt heater and see if that does it. If it can't keep up, put in another one. I feel you will need 2 of them but I have no idea what the weather is like where you live or how cold/hot you keep your house.

I noticed somewhere that said the difference between the tank and the room and it gave a chart, based on that, I think one 300W will do.

I'm in Chicago area and the tank is in the basement, I keep the house at 70-74 degrees in the winter, so I should be good.

anyone have recs on good heaters?

The reason why you would want more than one heater is to have a back up in case one stops working for any reason

I have always used two or more heaters rated at just over half of what I needed, In my current tank I needed 300watts so I use two 200 watt heaters for a couple of reasons.
I think two heaters are better at keeping a stable temp, I have one in the main tank and one in the sump so if the main pump should quit both the tank and the sump have heat.
If one heater malfunctions and sticks on , By itself it won't have enough wattage to raise the temp to fast.
If one quits then the other should be able to keep the temp from dropping to fast.
