I would like to see what people 17 and under's tanks look like. Because of the limited money we have this should be cool. Oh and I am 15 and here is my tank. I will post a pic when I can find my camera.

I'm 15 also and slowly setting up a 20H with hopefully t-5 lighting and I haven't decided on the live stock yet. I'll post whats happening now. Just a tank with sand though.

Turn 16 tomorrow woot woot. cant load pics. Its a 90 gallon RR , 2 250w mh, got it from a freind.i worked all summer long so i could earn the money. And i get no financial support from parents and this stuff is expensive. Used equiptment is my friend. matt

I'm 15 too and working on a 36 gallon bowfront predominantly SPS/clam reef. Just waiting for the overflow boxes and a few miscellaneous plumbing items to arrive, and then I'll have it full of water. It'll be my second/sort of third reef tank. This summer I'll be working for my dad to pay for it. I've done a lot of DIY and that's brought the cost down some.

Andrew, what wattage/temp of lights are you running?

The Yellow Longnose
12/30/2006, 03:48 PM
im 15 and i had a 24 gallon nano cube with a 150watt mh and a protein skimmer. with lots of sps and lps and softies. It start costing me around 50 bucks a month just to maintain, so i sold it. There's a couple pictures in my gallery but it was before i went crazy with the metal halides and the corals.

i'm 17 ( only till january 16th tho). Here's my 40 breeder. So far its turned out ok...many things i could have done a lot better if i just waited tho. Many things i'll do a bit different on my next tank (125 at least)....lights and rock being the number 1 and 2 things. I will not settle for pc's anymore, and i'm getting enough rock to actually fill the tank this next time. I wish i could have gotten more rock to fill this tank up higher but couldnt afford it at the time.

Well heres an older pic from maybe 3 months ago or so. Lots different now but i dont have any pics..
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i295/sir_dudeguy/Tank%20Pics/IMG_1784.jpg

here's my black false percs in their toadstool host :) I've only had the toadstool 3 months or so...when i got it, it was the size of a quarter...in this pic it was probably 3 inches across (and that wasnt that long after getting it) and now it is probably double that...close to 6 inches....faster growing than my xenia (which is way bigger now than in that pic above)
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i295/sir_dudeguy/IMG_2430.jpg
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i295/sir_dudeguy/IMG_2431.jpg

Oh, and another thing i'm not doing again is buying used stuff...well some stuff i'll buy "used" (like live rock...i'd take 3 bucks a pound from local people over 10 bucks a pound from the store any day). But stuff like pumps and skimmers and whatnot...probably all gonna be new. I've had too many things fail on me. OH, and another thing..i'm not buying any more cheap stuff lol. Stuff like rio's and jebo/odysea stuff. Every one of the products i've got from both companies has all died and i've been in the hobby for only 1 year...stuff doesnt die in a year unless it sucks :)

thanks ;) I'm thinking about taking all the corals besides the leathers out and making it an all leather tank. They are doing the absolute best in this tank by FAR. No other coral that i've ever had has grown as big and fast as my 3 leathers.

I'm on winter break until tuesday edwing206. What about you guys/gals?

Love the toad sir_dudeguy, very nice! I just bought one a week ago and I have it on hold at the LFS tell my tank gets up and running!

Just because we are under 17 doesn't mean we can't have as nice of tanks as some of the other people on this site that are older than us! Don't limit yourself otherwise you'll be exactly how small you make yourself.:)

edwing206

You make a good point AVAlover but what I meant was that most people that are 17 and under don't make as much as a full grown adult, that's all

AVALover5498
12/30/2006, 07:07 PM
Ok, sorry I misunderstood.:) I just don't want people to feel like they can't do something because they are younger. You can do anything you want and that's the truth!

purebullet, that looks like a really good start. I can't wait to see it in a year

im 14-

started tank in august.. moved up from a 50, 30x18x18 or something like that..

hope to be doing sps in near future.. just getting my alk and calcium buffered out and i should be good to go..

may do an OM suirt and eheim 1260 for return instead of my 1250 split into two locline flares..

let me know what you think ;)

enjoy

as you can see anthelia is going crazy.. if anyone wants some ill sell it for not that much.. a year ago it was smaller that that smallest area in the full tank pic.

green candycane in bottom right isnt doing that well.. it was always open and splitting alot.. now it doesnt open that much anymore i dont know if it was stung or what.. i dont know what it wouldve been stung by though i dont have any dangerous corals i dont think and my anemone is on the other side of the tank and it has never fallen down or anything..so if anyone knows whats going on there that would be great

Love the toad sir_dudeguy, very nice! I just bought one a week ago and I have it on hold at the LFS tell my tank gets up and running!

ya thats my fav. one in there. Well maybe besides the frogspawn. But i got another toadstool that is bright green (like gsp) and another that is peach/tan but has pure white polyps that are really large and weird looking. I never get pics tho. I need to get some soon.

I dont know leathers normally grow this fast, or if its just the conditions are perfect for it in the tank...but they're doing the best in there, which is why i'm considering making it leather only.

My next tank is going to be a gorgonian tank most likely. I just got a 16g bowfront w/HOB overflow for 70 bucks total (from 2 different people tho). I will be adding proly an HQI 150w MH because i dont think t5's will fit....do they make t5's less than 20 inches? But it will most likely just be for maybe a couple little gobies and then all gorgonians with a big red sea fan on the back wall for sure :)

edwing206
12/30/2006, 10:07 PM
this is cool. avalover you were right, there are many tanks here nicer than some adults. there should be a forum for people 17 and under, no old people hahaha

edwing206
12/30/2006, 10:13 PM
i know what you mean dudeguy. my uncle gave me some pipe organ and zoas from his tank which were under 250 watt MH and ever since i put them in my tank with 110 watts of pc (soon to be T5) they have more than doubled. and every new frag of zoas i get grow at a very quick rate. this may be normal but i like it

i dont know the exact species name of the last pic of zoas but i got them from live aquaria.. they were pretty cheap and it was a fairly large rock.. they were called super colored zoas or something of that sort.. i thought they looked cool and i got a huge zoa polyp of some sort on the other side of the rock (you can just see the top in the pic) and it had a sponge on it which is cool i guess?? lol

some of the polyps have like a black middle though i think there is one or two in that pic.. very cool

rsxs1212
12/30/2006, 10:19 PM
by the way if anyone wants to say anything negative about my tangs in my size tank please dont say anything.. i plan on getting rid of them when they grow too large.. i have them both fairly small, ive heard enough about how bad it is for the fish..i understand that they could have it better but i do plan on selling them as the grow larger

just thought id say that for the future :)

one bit of advice for anyone who gets a job at an lfs to support this addiction... ggive the check right abck to your work... its going there anyways :

how much have all of you spent so far and what have you done to pay for it
mines over 10k sofar ( id ont nkow where all it went .. dosnt seem to add up but i know thats what i spent s far befor corals)

generally tangs are fine in a 75 and i had the yellow in my 50..

But there are those select few who will go after you about it calling it animal cruelty,...,... most of that type suggest a 5 if not 6 foot tank is needed to have tangs and keep them healthy.. i have had my yellow for a year and a half now and hes never had any problems... my cousin had one in a 29 for 8 months (i have to admit that is a bit small for a tang) and he was doing fine though but when he was on vacation a clam died and killed everything

I just bought 6 55 watt t5 lights for my 55g. The tank has been up and running for almost a year. I am just now getting the money to turn it into a reef tank. I’ll try to post pics later.

I have a crappy, Fujifilm A345 4.1 megapixel digi. All i have to do to get decent clear pics is to turn on the macro mode or the the little flower icon. Just fiddle around with it and look into the manual and you will get the hang of it. :)

Great starts and tanks guys...

I'm 15, this is my 29

Lighting:
150watt MH HQI, 2x65 actinics, soon to be 150HQI retro w/ 2x24 T5 actinics(got an amazing deal I coudnt turn down) once my canopy is finished and I get my delivery it will be complete for equipment, except maybe a skimmer down the road.

Filtration:
12 gallon "HOB" fuge, really just stands up on its own behind the tank, got the heater, lots of cheato, sand and a small pouch of carbon in there, carbon doesn't really get water flow through it, and I am considering adding one of those tunze nano skimmers in the first compartment.

Flow:
tunze nano 6025, minijet 404 provides flow to the fuge

Natural filtration:
~45 lbs. mixed LR, 50lbs. southdown

Tank is almost 3 years old, reef for about 11 months, will be a year in February. It started FOWLR for about a year and a half, then I started with softies and PC, then moved to halide and stonies.

I keep zoanthids, ricordea, palythoas, LOTS of GSP, some acropora frags, lots of digis, a cap, and a derasa clam recently added.

Pics:

Close up of clams intake siphon, it looks alot like crocea under actinics, but it is a derasa, blue electric lines with gold patches: http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k312/mikey31491/newtankpicswclam001.jpg

Me, I just save up alot of money by reffing soccer games to support my reef. Frags also help pay for some things, and also being in CTARS helps, and hopefully will look good on college apps(grades are iffy;)) I play soccer for my school and anything else on weekends.

Whats up guys, I am 16 and I have a 150g reef. But right now I am having the problem of brown algae on the sand and rock, along with hair algae. I was looking through everyones pictures and noticed how clean your sand is. I do a 10% water change every week on the tank and sometimes a little more. I have plenty of water movement but I cant seem to get it to go away. All paramenters are perfect as well, any suggestions? Thanks!

Sup all im 15..had a nano running for about 3 months now with a jawfish and some zoas...and i also maintain my bros sps reef while hes at college..nice tanks so far..i also have problems keeping my sandbed clean

rsxs1212
01/06/2007, 07:16 PM
well the sandbeds always look alot cleaner in the pics than they actually are... but you can get sandsifting gobies or stars( usually dont live long since they run out of food) that constantly stur up the sand.. i have hermit crabs that will go around and pick at the sand a little but i wouldnt say they keep it perfectly white :)

Big Rick for your hair algae maybe just get alot of snails or hermits to help clean it up.. how long has the tank been set up??
try skimming a little wetter.. i had that problem and when i started skimming wetter it slowly went away.. what test kits do you use?? as in brand.. some say you are ok but are actually way off..

You guys have some great looking tanks.

I think reefing is a great hobby for young people. It's so expensive that it doesn't leave any money for buying drugs/alcohol.. a true anti-drug, LOL. It's good to keep busy with fun stuff like this.

Also good luck to you msuzuki126. I love your tank so far, especially the lieutenant tang. I want to get 1, maybe 2 tangs for my tank too. Do you have any inverts in with your blue-throat trigger?

msuzuki126
01/06/2007, 09:43 PM
I lost the blue-throat a while ago, so i just have the two tangs, two tomatoe clowns, and a lyretail anthias. I have never heard any problems with blue-throat and inverts though.

fishyz
01/06/2007, 09:49 PM
I'm considering getting a blue-troat when my tank is all set up. Do you ever find that your 2 tangs are really agressive towards each other? Do you use tap water or RO water?

rsxs1212- The tank has been setup since last May. Its a 150g with a 65g sump, octopus NW-200 skimmer, Pan World NH 150PS pump, maxi jet 1200, mini jet, seio 1100, and Nova Extreme t-5 4x54 ho lighting. I currently have a sand sifting star which does an ok job but doesnt obviously move fast, and around 40 snails as my clean up crew for now. I however am not currently using RO/DI water which could make a big difference in the algae?

Livestock:
2 green chromis
1 goby
coral beauty angel
powder blue tang

A few softies such as zoas and then sps.

Bigrick08, the algae on the sand could be from old bulbs. I have gotten some pretty gross brown algae when using old NO lamps.

Why would old bulbs promote algae growth?

nice tank srbball, how do you like the nanostream?
fishes2889, people say that algae likes lower kelvin like 6500k, so when a bulb shifts color spectrum and kelvin due to being used too long algae grows and corals don't do as well. this is what i have read. anybody know anything about this?

rsxs1212
01/07/2007, 07:24 AM
ro/di water can make all the difference in the world..

if you dont want to invest in a unit (i suggest you do and make sure its a good one) you can just buy distilled water at your grocery store.. the filter guys have great deals on good rodi systems though and they will pay for themselves pretty quickly
