Hello everyone, the other day I noticed this strange snail like thing in my tank and I have no idea what it is and I couldn't seem to find it in any of my books. It's body is very tar like. Anyone know what this is? Thanks.

looks like a Stomatella snail to me.

Is the whole black thing part of it or just the greyish part?

If just the greyish part, I agree it looks like Stomatella varia.
If the entire black part maybe some sort of flatworm or nudibranch...

If you see it flow across the eyes of your fish when they blink you need to call Fox Mulder.

But seriously... is this it?

The whole thing is part of it. It's got the long black tar like body, and the greyish part is it's shell which really doesn't seem like a shell, more like half a clam shell stuck to it's back.

I agree - it looks like a stomatella varia to me. I have quite a few of them myself. I have black ones and I also have light colored (almost white) looking ones.
