I got this little guy(he's about 2-3/4in)yesterday. The store said Crocea but from my photos it looks more like Maxima. It doesn't really matter to me because I only have one clam and it is a Derasa, so either one would be fine. I would just like to know which one it is so I can better care for it. Thanks

It was hard to get a good picture of the side of him without taking him out of the tank so I did the best I could. If I need to I can take him out if it will help with the ID

Thanks!
I was looking at the pictures in "Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium" and it did not look like the Crocea Clams in the pictures, although I thought there was a chance that it was tank raised and still had shutes

Deffinantly a maxima and a beautiful one at that.

the mantle shape, color and dotted pattern are very typical of a maxima. another give away ( can't see it very well in the pics but ) is the symmetry of the shell. if you look at the side of your derasa the 'ribs' are equally spaced ( a crocea is similar but not quite as symmetrical ) a maxima shell is usually longer than it is tall and the 'ribs' appear to appear to smear ( lack of better word ) off to one side.

very nice looking clam :)
