What were you planning on keeping down the road ? I have the Current Nova Extreme 4 x 54W T5's on my 55. I'm pleased with it, but all I want later on are soft corals. It all depends on what you want to keep.

48" Nova Extreme 4x54W T5 HO w/4 Lunar

Is what I was told to use for my 40L, which is similar to a 55.
They run 199$

If you have some money to spend there are also
48" Nova Extreme 8x54W T5 HO w/4 Lunar for 299$

8x54W T5 would bake everything in a 55 if you were to run all the lights. Even 6x54W T5 would be alot of light over a 55; though its doable depending on the combination of bulbs and the timing sequence that you set up.

Personally, I'm in the process of setting up a metal halide/PC combo for my 55 gallon. I have two 175W MH, Reefoptix reflectors and a Blue Wave II magnetic ballast. I'm currently using a 4x65W PC fixture (its been adequate for the past 6 months, but I'm eager to get my new lights up and going). I'm going to incorporate at least two of the PC lights (possibly all four if I can squeeze them all into a canopy) to run actinics.

MH seem to be the most popular, though everyone with T5 speaks very highly of them . . . I'd recommend both.

You get what you pay for, I woud look at sunlight Supply tek light or MH/T5 Combo. Its kind of a prefence go to your local LFS and look at different lights in there setup and the one you like see what light they use.
