ok. so i have a 45 gal., Im switching to a 90 gal w/ sump/fuge

I was planning on buying 50-60 lbs of liverock, sand, and cycling the tank 6 weeks or so.

then adding all comtents from current tank over to the new one.

ok. so heres what im thinking. Im dieing to have new liverock and hope all sorts of free stuff comes on it. most likely the most interesting thing would be some aptasia and a few crabs.

SO, Heres where I need your help.

Can I just fill new 90 gal. with new sand, fill it half way with fresh salt water, buy 50 lbs of DEAD rock, and move everything over from my current tank rightaway? (including all/most of the current tank water?

If this is possible, and wouldent cause ANY problems... where do I get that much dead or 'base' rock??

Would love this if it would work. I moved my tank in july and used 1/2 new water and just a few cups of old sand and everything worked out great...

Thanks for ANY opinions!!!

Maggie

sounds great, and its a lot cheaper then buying more live rock, when you can just seed base rock with what youve got alread, and dont have to worry about the headaches of unwanted hitchhikers

Yes. I would skip all but a scoop or two of the old sand.

It will be fine, just check your parameters as though you were starting a new tank and be prepared for waterchanges. Shouldn't be an issue though, just take it slow and hold off on stocking until the tank has some time to re-mature.

I got 400 pounds of base rock from reeferrocks, but he since took a medical retirement and I'm not sure where a good place is to pick up base rock any more. I'm sure someone else can chime in here:)

And in response to the first portion of your post... If you have good coraline, no nuisance algae, predators or unwelcome guests, I would skip on new live rock with tons of hitch hikers. Sometimes the excitement of rock such as TBS dies in a hurry when you introduce a pest into your tank:D
