Running on legs, actual distance lens of Solaris to frag=16", frag is 1 1/4". I ran daylights whites at 50% till yesterday, now blue and whites at 100%, running timer mode 5:00AM to 10:00PM, 1/2 hour moon cycle then total off. Tank is still cycling so growth might be retarded for awhile. Its a new tank with existing rock and new sand.

looking nice John. The color in a new blue tip I put in the tank is unreal. I might just use this tank for all my acros. Will try to get some pics.

It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, ran on auto, northern Hemi for first week. All was doing well but I get up for work at 5:00AM and like to view till I go to bed. When I get the new fixture(tomorrow I hope) I will set it on Auto, Southern Hemi, so days will be longer in winter. The left bank, 2 lunar rows won't shut down on auto at night, Pat sent a new one out Friday, should be here tomorrow.

no biggie on the hrs - just took me by surprise - good luck with the replacement - I did not know about the southern hemi being longer in winter - I tried to adjust my shortest day to be longer and the unit went off of auto - Pat says the next version of the firmware will rectify that - I wonder if others experienced that or just me - i just set it to southern after taking the unit back to its defualts to fix what happended when I changed the shortest day. 522 minutes is too short for me

Here's one of my Bali Tri-colors from Steve Tyree. First pic taken 11/7/06 and the second 1/3/07, just under two months. I've had them under the Solaris since Sept. I'm running the Solaris with 100% day whites and 75% day blues on the pre-programmed auto day length, Northern Hemisphere. Lunar lights I have dimmed to 25% because, IMHO, I thought they were too bright on factory setting. That's one of the features I like about the Solaris, we can program them to suit our eyes.

From November 7, 06

From January 3, 07

The first shot was taken with my Nikon D70 with the Solaris full on daytime. The second pic taken using my wife's Kodak Z650 during the Lunar light period. That explains the difference in flash brightness between the two pics.

Nick ... or Amphib....

Do either of you know if the units to be released in a few weeks will consist of the updated firmware? Just curious.... and I must say it's great to have a thread where we can finally compare notes, pics and ideas without all the speculation. Thanks John for the link!

Do you gents know if the current Solaris units have the 1W Lumileds or the 3W lumileds in 'em.

Just wondering if and when the "400W" versions come out if they will have the 3W or 5W lumileds in 'em...

I'll need to talk to Pat about another matter and will ask him about the firmware update.

Well Nick, I think he can afford it. 50,000 hours of LED life / 17 hours per day / 365 days ...
will give you 8.05 years before he has to change the LEDs out!!! :D

17 hours!!!! WOW.

Amphibious

The current version (250 watt) use 3w LEDs the new version (400watt) will use a 4.5w LED, if I remember correctly. The 400 watt will not be out until April at the earliest according to Pat a few days ago.

i can only guess they are 3w just like mine and the 5w units are not in production yet

Thanks Amphib... I appreciate it. Another question if I may... ... If one uses the legs to suspend the 72" unit just how far is the lens from the water and what is the approximate height of the top of the unit from the bottom of the legs. I'm asking as I'm wondering if I'll have to modify my current hood height or if this unit will fit. I'm uncertain as to the dimensions when using the legs. Thanks again!

ReefWraith,

With the feet resting on the top frame of the tank, it's 3 1/2" from the light lens to the top of the tank plus what ever distance your water level is below the top. It's 7" to the top of the Solaris give or take a hair from the top of the tank.

Did that make sense?

Is everyone finding that algae is not happy under this light? I had a lot of hair algae on some of the rocks I transferred over, it is turning white/clear? As said above, running 17 hours at 100%, the algae is stressing and the SPS are coloring up, Turbinaria frag that had a algae filled gash for months is healing over since the transfer. This is a new tank set up in Nov. with fresh Tropic-Marin Pro-Reef, but I put lots of organics in it to start a good community, cut back when I transferred SPS. Could be a coincidence but seems impressive.

thats great - i didn't have enough of that algae to notice - it all sounds promising - i have noticed that my ph is not ramping up as high/as fast.

Thanks Amphibious.... that does help! I got your email regarding the light and I can't wait to get it on Friday (though I'll have to wait until Sunday to set it up as I'll be out of town). Looking forward to what changes I may see and rest assured I'll be documenting everything (though my photography skills leave something to be desired).

the only algae I get is the brown diatoms on the glass, no doubt from the sunlight/light from other tanks. No hair algae to date. The only algae doing good is coraline :)
