Does anybody have growing SPS under t5 or vho lighting?

If so, how many watts to a gallon or other necessary info.

Thank you. Also pics and history of your tank would be nice.

You need to search...this topic has been covered and beaten to death, so much that there are only tiny pieces left of what used to be a big discussion...

Watts per gallon, does not matter...its par.

I have tons of SPS under 8 54 watt t-5's, they grow awesome....

I used solely VHO lighting for a number of years and had very good results. Now, I run a T5 and VHO combination and like the look better than either one alone.

I am running 16 48" T5 over my 240 sps tank and would never go back to halide's. The par I am getting is better and the colors I am getting are great. I am in the process of taking pictures every week to post the color shift in my corals over T5.

I have 6 48" T5s on my 75 gallon tank. Everything is growing really well (knock on wood).

I'm running 5x24w T5 over a 29gal...so far so good...I've been keeping SPS under it for over a year now with good results... this is my first try at SPS, so I have no exp. with MH or VHO...

Er1c-the-reefer has 6x54w T-5 for his 120g and his SPS doing great.

Thanks to all who are helping. Please feel free to chime in.

I am a brand new member to reefcentral and I have found that the search engine hardly ever works. Thus, I can't find other posts of this topic.

But its seems that the t5 over sps' have been pretty clear thus far.

Question:

Over my 50g (48long, 18 high, 15 wide) would four 48in long bulbs (2 daylight, 2 atintics) be enough for SPS.

Then as I get more money I am upgrading to a 90g with as many t5s as I can get.

This is something that I am looking at, but I would buy two of these for a total of 4 lights

Sunlight Supply's Tek T5 48" retrofit kit includes: 2 parabolic reflectors - each runs a 54 Watt T5 bulb, Stucchi moisture-proof endcaps & standoffs, major brand (universal or advance) T5 high output electronic ballast, sockets & power cord. Also includes 2 -54W Giesemann Powerchrome T5s: 6000k Midday, Pure Actinic, Actinic Plus or Aquablue Plus.

With the tank only being 18" high, I think you will have plenty of light for most SPS.

Agreed.

Is there a hard and fast rule for t5 wattage per gallons or wattage per depth?

For example, If I go with those numbers above my 18in high 50g (216watts)

what would I need over a 24in tall 90g. Of course the SPS would be more like 18in from the top or closer? Would 6bulbs work, 8bulbs work?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I am not finding quality info anywhere else.

i use 770 watts over a 150 gallon tank
vho

good sps growth when i want it.. ( ie supper saturate CA.)

i put a block of CA ( turbo ca that hardened) right into my dsump last months and most corals doubled in size

770w of VHO? a BLOCK of CA? and your corals double it size? That is amazing, i don't think Randy Holmes-Farley himself dare to do that. Can you post some picture of your corals? May be this is something good that we all can learn from ya.

Serioussnaps, i wasn't asking you for picture. i was asking Goda to show picture of his corals since he add a block of CA and 770w of VHO and his corals double it size. I saw pic of your tank already.

you may be under a false impression. all my corals are frags so double in size is like 1/2 inch to an inch of growth still more growth then i got when i was using bionic

i had some turbo CA that went solid ( got weater in it.. i dunno how)

so i placed it in to my refuge which has hardly any flow ( really the flow is an internal powerhead and there is 0 water inlet into the refuge except that of diffusion from the sump via a u tube. make up water is added to the refuge yet the salinity is the same as hte main system proving this, so the solid block of CA that disolved slowly over a the course of a week or 2 was also slowly added to the system ( id never add it righ to the tank) CA levels were at 520 constantly and alk was stable at 2.2 meg/l
considering on frags i usualy get 1 inch growth every 4 months to have 1/2 inch to an inch in a month is great

i posted about this before but due to color loss durring times of rapid growth i stoped supper saturating the CA ( the only reason i did it this time was i had the solid block of CA on hand)

btw i want to upgrade to t5;s jus thavent had hte time..

last month to this month,
superman monti .2 inches of growth
red monti cap 1.5 inches
unidentified green acro .75 inches growth from several new branches
brown monti digi .5 inches of growth ( was a half dead frag)
pink birds nest 1 inch
acro with redish body and green polyps .2 inches of branching growth 1 inch of encrusting growth ( $5 rescued frag )
hydnophora ( 2 of them) no knoticable growth

all this under VHO

now i do want to add that the colors seem weird under vho and im highly considering MH that i can turn on when i have people over to just show off the tank
