I am very new to LPS. I bought a small frag of Blastomussa for my nano and was told this is a very slow growing coral. So I assumed when coral was growing I expected it to split into two. Well just feeding the tank and my blasto was small pieces of mysis and noticed under the polyps of all 3 heads small little mouths. One of the heads had 3 little heads.

I want to make sure I am seeing what I am seeing if that make sense. Is this the way it grows? I have searched the web but didn't see much on the growth rate and such.

Thx in advance!

i got a piece of blasto about 7 months ago with 3 polyps and now it has 16 so i think they actually grow pretty fast i just spray mine with photoplankton and it works great

LPS always grow faster when fed. If you don't feed them then they are slow on growth.

This is where they get their reputation for being slow growers. Those that don't spot feed or add food to the system see them as slow growers, but guys like me who spot feed 4-5 times a week see amazing growth and color from all LPS!

Hi Rick,
I was wondering what type of lighting are you using? I'm setting up a new 65G (24 inches deep) and I have 250 10K HQI Ushio and 2-39W T5 1-UVL Super Actinic and the other 1-ATI Blue Plus. Will this be to much light? I have a mixed tank and just want to make sure I don't harm them.

I personally feel you can not have too much light on a tank. You may have to put the blastos in a less bright area in the tank, but they should be fine. I have a 55gal that has 720W of light. This is accomplished by 2 250MH 15k(I like 20k Better)XM and 2 46.5" VHO actinic URI bulbs.

You should be fine with your lighting setup.

BTW they dont eat "photoplankton" or phytoplankton....meaty stuff. Stuff you can see when it is in the tank is a good rule of thumb.

I blast my LPS with cyclopeeze...they love it! and balloon like crazy after feeding!@ The ones with bigger mouths get pices of shrimp every other week. I see lots of growth.
