Can I use a prefilter on a powerhead like the one below for a QT filter?

http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MJ-PREF&Category_Code=Maxijet

I was planning on using a sponge filter with an airpump and then a powerhead for water movement. This would take care of both filteration and water movement.

I would keep it in the sump when the QT tank is not in use.

Thanks,
Michael

The only prob I see with that is the organics would still be in the tank until you cleaned the prefilter. Water in the qt should be as close to the display water as possible. If this is your filtration and flow, I'm not sure it would do what you wanted.

How big is the QT? I think a HOB filter like an emporer or similiar may work better for filtration. That's what I use when I set up my QT.

Well, the QT is about 10 gallons. I was going to use an air driven sponge filter as laid out in this article http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-10/sp/feature/index.php

I figured a maxijet with a sponge filter on it is pretty much the same thing???
