I recently ordered two 48" T6 fluorescent actinic lamps from a web retailer. Due to the snowstorms in Colorado, it finally arrived on December 27th, 2006 after 9 days. I just opened the package yesterday after it had been sitting in my house for 11 days. I found that both fluorescent tubes had been snapped in two during shipment. I promptly placed the package and its contents into a garbage bag and left them outside under the eaves.

While the retailer has indicated a willingness to reimburse the cost of the fluorescent lamps, he has not given me instructions on how to dispose of them. I understand that the lamps contain mercury.

What is the proper way of disposing these broken lamps?

What are the health risks of mercury vapor from these two lamps?

Thanks!
