View Full Version : What flow rate is good for SPS in a 40g?

Hi, I'm thinking of setting up a 40 gallon mix corals and fish reef tank, but I know pretty much about every I need to know except the current in the tank.

I have read that SPS corals need HIGH flow current, but they never consider to tell how much it is... Before I start this tank, I must do research like what kind of powerhead I should get, what does a wave maker do, and what wave maker or powerhead I should get... What is a good rate in a tank? or what rate of flow is good on each left and right side?

I know about light, filters, subtrates, but not current.

Can anyone give me some advice about keeping SPS? well feeding is easy, just current I'm confused.

What do I know about current? current carrys food around the tank, help fish exercise, and blow detrius, keeping away dead spot.

Does anyone have any idea?

In a 40g, 2 Maxi-Jet 600 mods would be enough for SPS coral. Either that or 2xTunze Nano Stream 6045.

hmm... thanks. what about wave maker? or controller, How they work?

A wavemaker will only reduce the life of the MJ mod and the non-controllable tunze nanos unless these pumps recieve upto an hour of resting time and running for 2 hours.

The nano stream mentioned above can not be controlled unless you run it on intervals such as 3 hours on and 2 hours off.

If the controllable tunze are within your budget, then that's your best shot.

I'm thinking of getting 2xTunze Nanostream, and get Multicontroller 7095.0 later on when i have more budget. I don't think their any other kit that comes for small tank, mostly 200gal+.
What do you guys think?

What is the purpose of that Nanostream rail mount? Does the powerhead move up and down? Make a S stream?

Do you guys think 2x Tunze Stream 6055 are to much of my tank? Does the 7095 control the water calm at night and regular fow during the day?

I love my wavemaker (I know I'm the minority). But I love having my hacksawed MJ900s on channels 3 and 4 on my wavemaster pro. The current switches but the pumps are both on 90% of the time. They just switch off and on randomly, and since I hacksawed the powerheads, the current hits my reef from all kinds of different angles.

I don't think it will be too much if you intend to have predominantly sps, especially if they are the controllable 6055s. I see no reason to calm the water at night, since that is when aeration, circulation, and gas exchange are needed the most.

You'll want more than 2 600s in that tank. Get as much flow as you can, not only for the SPS, but to keep poo, etc in the water colum. You want at least a turnover rate of 35x.

kslick, having two MJ600 mods will give a 50X turnover rate and will be plenty since they produce about 1000gph each.

I run 2 mj 1200 mods. The mods are kind of a PITA IMO and I still have a little detritus settling. Two controllable tunzes would be sweet. An OM or seaswirl closed loop would be another option...

Check out the FAQ thread on flow.

2 6055 on a multicontroller will be sweet i have basicly the same setup i would reccomend bare bottom no substrate for sps only i thought i wanted mixed reef and im stuck with sand now its looks good but the sps in a grown in tank look sooomuch better
i have two 6025 and a seio 620 and its not enough flow

any 2 800 gph powerheads, one at each side of the tank on a wavemaker will make some awsome current.

I run 6- MJ 1200's on a wave timer in my 40 and my corals love it :eek2:

Sorry ReefRockerLive, I did not notice the MJ's were mods.

I run an eheim 1262 through an OM squirt, an eheim 1250 as my sump return, and a nanostream 6025 in my 30 gallon cube that will be mainly an SPS tank.

What is the total GPH from ALL pumps do you guys recommend?

Jeffie, What kind of wave timer do you used? Tell me more about your setting on your 6 MJ1200, that's kind of a lot of pump don't you think? Wouldn't you want a pair or a set of 3 stronger pump than MJ1200? save plug holes, power, and space.

What kind of wave makers are good out there these days?

Amphiprion, so the water must be strong, even at night?

here is my tank with two 6025s and a seio620 for flow it is ok but i could use allot more and if i went bare bottom i would be really on the low side.
The difference in a maxijet and a nanostream is night and day sps corals really respond well to the flow, so does my clam, gorgonian, xenia and zoas they all respond well to the flow, i know it adds tons of o2 to the water i have a preorder in for a nanostream 6055 and singlecontroller will take out the seio and the aquaclear then, aquaclear was just something i had from back in the day and am using to add random flow and run carbon

do a closed loop i did that for my 40 the game one that melev did i have 1500 going through that my sps love it but im wanting to also add a tunze or mj mod also i love flow you can never had enough!

Wow, tank there GSM guy. I like your Stream, it look really good in your tank. What is the total flow rate in that tank anyway?
