View Full Version : Polyp Extension only at Night?

Have you guys heard of this? Pretty much every tank I've seen under MH or T5 has full polyp extension during mid day photoperiood. My SPS only extend at night. All of them, not just a couple. Very different types....A. Millepora, Blue Tort, Chips Acro, Purple Bonsai, Grape Cap, its driving me insane. Put the flashlight on them at night and sure enough they are out and feeding and having a great time. They are in a 38g tank with a 4x39w TekLight over them. I run Giesemann bulbs, 2 10,000k, 1 True actinic and 1 6500k. I have two seio 620s for flow in the corners, a canister for carbon and a Remora skimming like crazy. Any ideas or suggestions? They are all growing and encrusting like crazy, all my water parameters are in check. Thanks in advance for your help!

If they look good, and grow well I wouldn't really worry about it.

I suspect a daytime nipper as well......

Ahh that could be it. I have a flame angel, although I've never seen him nip. Also have an oscellaris and an algae blenny.

So what do you recommend should it be a daytime nipper? I am just curious as I have a similar situation and livestock.

I got $10 on the flame angel.

My tank is the same way. I've got a Rusty angel who I've never seen nip anything in 4 years, but she's sneaky too. Only good extension at night. I do feed plankton while the lights are off though, and never on.

I wouldn't look past the algae blenny either, my bicolor blenny used to occasionally nip at SPS as well.

flame angel and blenny, unless a lmb, are two prime suspects in this crime

i agree. had a yellow clown goby. do not recommend this creature to anyone with acros!!!!!! i had the same problem with my PE. i even lost a green milli frag because of that little %#@!
they love milli's.

keep watch on them. they can do damage if they are nipping.

i noticed a significant improvement on PE when i removed my Yellow Clown Goby... i'd remove the flame!

Well, we're in the process of buying a house so I guess I will keep him out of the new SPS tank thats in the planning stages. He'll have to stay for now!

I have flame angel that is pretty good but I third the yellow clown goby call, I put one in my main tank with a bunch of frags and within minutes he was sucking polyps out of my mille's....

Your parameters could be playing a part, temp decreases at night as well as PH/ALK...But if you have a nice lunar cycle going, they may be acting how they do in nature...Lots of critters bouncing around the tank and brushing up against them will keep them in during the day.

The seio's put out good flow, but you may want to vary the flow to stimulate them. Maybe throw a maxi jet in there with one of those rotating pieces, that's a cheap way to give the coral or two you stick in front of it variable flow...Redirecting on of the seio's to bounce off the rocks may work also. Definitely try changing the flow anyways...
