I think they are good if you have lots large predatory fish. They can help keep the ammonia from going down really fast. The problem is you may have some real problems with nitrates and trickle filters are not going to provide any nutrient export. You would be well served if you got a big skimmer.

I would go with a big skimmer and alot of live rock

I run a trickle filter in my FOWLR tank because my tank isn't crammed with live rock - I have about 70lbs in my 125. My nitrates are usually around 10ppm. I do run a good skimmer though, and without it I think my nitrates would go through the roof without frequent large water changes.

I run a wet/dry, skimmer& LR on my 110g. I plan to do the same on my new 215 only bigger. I have BIG, FAT , sloppy fish with no problems. keep a tang in the tank; you will need one.
