View Full Version : Help me stock a 210 FOWLR!

Hey folks! I've always been a strict reef guy so have never really looked too closely at fish-only kinds of fish and their requirements. I have just set up a tank for a friends' bar, however, and I need some help coming up with a good stocking scheme. You all's input would be much appreciated!
Here's the set-up:

It's a 210 RR (6L' X 2W' X 30H") with two overflows; 4-1" drains and 2-1" returns. I have 3 drains plumbed to a Oceanic Systems 250 sump full of bioballs (never used those before!), and one drain feeds a Turboflotor 5000 shorty skimmer, which drains to the sump as well. I also will install a phosban reactor to run carbon and a turbotwist 18W UV sterilizer next week. The return pump is an off-brand 1/2 hp pressure pump and does the trick quite adequately.

Also, there's about 200lbs of LS and 165lbs of nice Tonga LR in it already. Lots of caves and places to hide. Lighting is 2 6ft VHO's, one actinic and one daylight (URI). Lights and heaters are controlled with a ReefkeeperII.

So here's what I need to decide:

1) should I go with a community FOWLR, or an aggressive FOWLR?
2) what fish should I put it in?

They have expressed some interest in an eel (like a zebra moray) and some other very colorful and flamboyant fish(think volitans). But I also was thinking that I would like this tank to have lots of inverts in it, and I'll explain why:

I was talking to the owner of the bar, who is also a school teacher, and I was showing him all the cool worms and brittle stars and snails that came in on the live rock (it was from an established reef breakdown), and he asked me to send him a list so of things like that so that he could make drawings of all of them to post next to the tank, and make it a game for kids to try and identify them in the tank (it's family style dining, too, and there are lots of kids). So that gave me the idea that I should pack it full of inverts, too, and put fish in there that are invert-safe.

So can you all help me decide what to put in it? I guess the inverts would be out if we go with aggressive fish, but I'm still considering this given the beauty of some of the angels, triggers, eels, etc., that you can do.

Otherwise, what would be a good stocking list for a cummunity FOWLR tank, including inverts? Thanks in advance for all your ideas! I'll post pics when the tank is stocked.

I also have a 210g fowlr and I am going aggressive. I just don't see the point of having a comm fowlr, as aggres fish are much more fun. If you don't go aggres, I would go reef.

so far in mine I only have a humu trigger, but I will be adding a porc puffer and an emperor angel. Not sure what else I am going to add, but there will be more.

And there are some inverts you can add no matter how mean the tank is, such as coweries, tiger snails, and extra large hermits.

When I think of an aggressive tank, I think of mostly large predatory fish that have unsocial temperaments. You could have a few large fish swimming back and forth, or choose to have a colorful active community tank with more fish and more options. Personally, I like tanks with a lot of visual appeal and movement. A couple large fish for show, but then several more swimming in and around the rock structure. Sand sifting gobies, small wrasses, a small group of damsels. Add some nice shrimp, crabs, snails and you've got a great tank. Not putting down agg. set-ups. I just think you really limit yourself.
If I were setting up such a system, I'd consider one of the medium sized angels like a majestic, maybe a hardy butterfly, pair of clowns, a dwarf angel, couple of sand sifting gobies, maybe a pair of fairy wrasses. A small shoal of chromis and then maybe a yellow or kole tang.

That sohal is just as aggress as the trigger if not more mean and likely to kill everything in the tank. But if you go comm, with some heavy filtration, you might as well still go reef.

I have both.

Niger Trigger
Pinktail trigger
Blue tang
P. Bue tang
Naso tang
Clowns
Eingineer goby
Bamboo sharks
Porkfish
and the list is still growing

I went through a lot of headaches in the beggining when i started off all aggressive and had a lot of bad algae growing and fish eating each other. So i went back to community but kept some of the aggressive fish.

that might defeat the purpose, but I'll run it by the owners...

I agree you don't have to go aggressive to have a nice FOWLR tank. Good thing is you can keep some of the nice fish that are otherwise not reef safe, such as majestic angel, but tangs of all sorts are colorful and interesting to have too.

Well, I started the stocking today, deciding to go with the community w/ inverts tank. Added a big fat flame angel and a bunch of cleaners. Everyone seems happy as can be!
