I just bought a Canon Digital Rebel XT and am trying to figure out how to adjust the white balance or even if it's the white balance that needs adjusting. In a full tank shot the sand seems overly bright and bleeds into the pic. Shot taken with 55mm lens. 1/60, f6.3, iso 400. What should i do?

That looks mostly like overexposure, so based on the settings you used, try f6.3 and a shutter speed of 1/125. That might still be too bright- if so you can try a smaller aperture (bigger fnumber) or faster shutter speed. Or a lower iso.

Maybe change the metering on the camera as well, it might be on center-spot which is looking at the darker rocks and will overexpose the sand.
