I have had my tank set up since March 06 and things are going well, so well that I want to take the next step and put corals into my tank. I am more interested in the soft corals. I know that I have to purchase the pro-compact light and other supplies for the corals, that's the easy part. I am worried about where to place them in the tank and the amount of lighting required. Please, I need help.

Check out Melevs website. You will find many very helpful articles about lighting, corals, and the interaction between them

Power Compacts are nice, but depending upon tank depth, may not be suitable. What size tank we talking about? height? and even with soft corals, they have high light and low light ones available, so please research before any coral purchase. They are not the cheapest pets and you don't want to spend alot on something that will definatly die in your particular setup.

It's only a standard 29 Gal setup. The LFS told me that the power compact would be fine for what I need. But I'm not sure.

Pc's are fine for softies if thats really all you want to keep. Sometimes the allure of sps can be more than what our lighting allows. But, I've been able to keep softies, lps, and select sps under my pc's on my 40 gallon with no problems. Keep the water params in check and you'll be fine.

um powercopmpacts are crap and are the scurge of this industry they will be gone within a couple years dont waste hard earned money on them go T5 or Metal Halide

The best lighting for your situation is the best you can afford. If you can afford halides or T5, then those will be much more flexible for coral choices. If your budget only allows for PowerCompacts, then your coral choices will be limited around that factor.

Be sure to check the ReefCentral used equipment forum for the awesome lighting deals that pass by there hourly/daily!

Yeah, if you can afford go with a halide. That way you can keep pretty much any coral. But if you want only soft corals than you don't need it. After a few years you will probably want to upgrade anyway though.
