I am looking into upgrading my skimmer for my 100g mixed reef (medium-heavy load) and am looking at this one
http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=ER1415 (http://)

The main problem I have is I have to get a external as I dont have room in the sump and I only have 23" clear under my stand. I dont think I will have room to open the cup to empty skimmate so I plan on adding the drain mod. Any opinions on this skimmer or would you recommend a different one that could work for my situation?

Thanks,
Steve

Well, first off the height isn't your problem. The skimmer is only 20" tall and you only need about 1" to get the cup off. I don't think that this skimmer is made to be used externally........I'd call Euroreef to make sure. Finally, bad idea on just using a cup drain. You have to take the cup off to clean the neck (I clean mine weekly).

Good luck.

Oh really these are the things I need to know as I have only previously used the hang on the back skimmers. I currently use a Remora hangon and I love it but Im building a canopy and want to get a external one for under the stand.

So you cant just plum the inlet side of the pump into the sump?

The link to MD is for a in sump model and only can be installed in sump. The external model that you need is:
ER1613 Euro-Reef RC135 (Recirculating) Protein Skimmer $668.00
RC135 6"Diam 20"H 7"W x 18"L 1" Output 1/2"Input

If you have height considerations than you might want to consider the ATI- BubbleMaster 150. The BM skimmers are much shorter than ones that would produce similiar skimmate. If you don't have room for an ATI in your sump you can wait til summer for the external models to appear or look into Octopus skimmers as they produce similiar skimmate to the ER, but use lower quality construction to save money. The NW-200 is only $390 and should be more than enough skimmer to handle your tank.

Thanks, I noticed that he needed an external the second I posted :D (don't know how I missed that). I added some options that should help with his external dilemma.

Those are really tough requirements, a 20"-21" tall external skimmer. Big bucks for the ER, but it meets the criteria.

Mano1192- Can you put the skimmer outside of the stand?

The specs on the MD website are wrong. AFAIK, a 135 is 24" tall. Even the RC80 is 22" tall.
Deltec APH525 is 20.5" tall.

Thanks for the replies.

TurboSnail8898- no i dont have any room to put it outside of stand and the tank is a corner tank and has 2 couches on each side. That also makes sound a issue to.

The Deltec looks like a good skimmer and it should fit well, but it is pretty pricey at 600, is there anything other ones that are a little cheaper?

Also why are these so expensive compared to Remora hang ons... more acrylic? Is there anyone that makes them custom but cheap (lol custom and cheap probably should even be in the same sentence!)

If at all possible I would like to stay around 300-400. Thanks again for all your help.
