are industrial type metal halides ok to be used on reef aquariums.

i found one type named "firefly" from our local hardware. i do not know its color temp but it is available in 75w~ 400w.

can i use it on a reef aquarium, i am planning to use 2 150w pendant type.

usually those are huge compared to pendant style MH. im not familiar with the one you listed. one, 400W MH will be perfect for a 55G. you can buy bulbs on-line to fit your need. www.marinedepot.com has both, pendants and bulbs. as do many others listed in the sponsers section here on RC. if you want SPS corals go with a 10K, LPS and softies i highly suggest a 14K. just a suggestion, happy reefin!

Yeh I agree the will work fine, just make sure the are well vented as most non fish lights assume the are hanging or mounted high and in open.
Over here most are 6500K - 10000K which is abit yellow for me but if it come with bulb try it 1st.
Ohh and i know stupid Q Does it have a glass cover on light.

I asked the sales guy about its color temp and he told me it’s just a normal day light bulb, (yellowish in color) so it seems to be around 6500k.

I also saw an enclosed type fixture I think it is normally used on sentry gates or industrial sites, and it is enclosed in a waterproof shell basically used for outdoors.

So if its no problem to use, I think I’ll just have to swap bulbs with a aquarium manufactured bulb and use the fixture.

Aquarium MH lights here in our country is way too expensive and these industrial types are somewhat cheaper than usual aquarium brands.

6500K ~ 6700K is what you want (least K)....I think those "normal daylight" are 3500~4700K.......
just buy new bulbs with correct K ratings.....
How much are they?

they will work but like the others stated they can be bulky and the color will like stated a day bulb (very yellow), I would retro one into a canopy with parts or retro kit to hide them

I used 5500k hamiltons for awhile and had awesome groth.Heres the catch, you need to supliment actinic light with them.If you were to do two 175 watt mh then you need to do at leat two actinic vhos.If money is an issue then you can get a workhorse ballast and two vho actinics.
