So I clipped out about 10 lbs. of halimeda and I am wondering about whether to let it stay in the system to free up the calcium, or whther that will also release PO4.

Also in my reading halimeda has been found to be suspect in a certain coral disease. Anyone have any info. on this?

The Halimeda will not release calcium or alkalinity back into the tank at any appreciable rate. They form calcium carbonate structures, and calcium carbonate is already supersaturated in saltwater.

I haven't heard anything about Halimeda and coral disease.

Jonathan, that is very interesting. I have read articles that claim halimeda is responsible for a very large portion of coral sand and assumed that it slowly releases calcium. Not true?

First house I lived in was in Redwood Shores...back when they first built it. Probably worth a fortune right now. :)

Well, Halimeda will form a lot of sand, but the rate of dissolution of calcium carbonate is too low to be significant for our purposes.

I wish I owned that house. :)
