I know these tend to be questionable in a reef but I couldn't resist. I thought I had researched before buying but have since learned so much more about this creature that I want to ask for anyone who has an abundance of knowledge to help point me towards even more.

I am having trouble figuring out a definitive answer to whether or not the species I have is a coral predator or omnivorous. I will not be keeping any leathers, which I've read is the type of coral most likely to be favored by a cowrie. The links below are to the type of cowrie that I think I have.

Mauritia arabica massauensis (http://www.gastropods.com/0/Shell_12420.html)

Mauritia arabica arabica (http://www.gastropods.com/7/Shell_37.html)

It has been in the tank for almost a week now and last night I finally saw that he is indeed eating algea off the back glass, but any other links to information would help.
Is this a snail that can/needs to be spot fed?

They will mow through your algae, but I have also known them to mow through a patch of zoa's. Just watch it closely...
