With all the new prop type power heads coming out are closed loops on the way out?

Not at all, they are still a much cleaner looking alternative than internal pumps and generally with the prooper pump do not add the heat that an internal pump does. I have both just because I have not yet spent the extra money on a larger closed loop pump.

I'm upgrading to 120 gal tank and it is going to be closed loop!

on my 90 gallon reef i have a dart on my closed loop. it does 3600 gph and i love it.. its clean cuse its under the tank in the stand area and doesnt use all that much energy. about as much as my mag 12 i use for my return. i love my closed loop and will continue to run em on future tanks

i love closed loop. i just went from my 75g to 125, i have my closed loop(extra mag 9) only about 3 ft of pvc.
two outputs, it makes very good tubulant water on one side. my sump pump takes care of the rest.

my tang loves it. it has its moments where it loves to just dart through it.

i agreee with the fish thing.. my fish love to swim in front of one of the six outlets and fly across the tank.. . i have 3/4 returns and my lawnmower blenny would actually swim down the outlet about an inch and eat the algae at the mouth of the outlets. love it

tit for tat.....i like the dispersed flow more than the funnel type, that is why i use tunze. I do like the clean look of a closed loop...as long as it is a drilled tank, because intake pipes are god aweful to look at, much worse than any ph. - imo

I would say they are still on the way in. I agree with the cleaner look. I will be using one with my 125g when I set it up next month.

I love the way they look when they are drilled in. But i have to agree, the strainer is def a eye sore.

i actually hid my intake behind a few pieces of rock i can remove to clean the screen. works out nicely.

My new 90g is going to have a closed loop! I can't stand the look of powerheads in the tank. Kinda takes away from what your suppose to look at.

well...although a tank can be artistic in it's overall look, i am more worried about making it the ideal set-up for its' inhabitants...and imho i think tunze/vortech accomplish this best. I do wish they were less intrusive though but what can i do.

WOW!.. I hope Cl's aren't on the way out. I just spent about $5,000 on a new 220G Custom Drilled Tank and supplies to make 2 closed loops running off 2 Ocean Motion 4-ways and a Barracuda and a Dart. It will have 3 inlets nad 6 outlets all together.

I hate the look of the Seios in my 75 G.

I like the look of a closed loop but 4800 GPH at 48 watts for 200$ is hard to pass up. I am seting up a new 125 and am trying to figure out if I want a closed loop. To match the kind of flow I could get from 4 of the prop type power heads I would need a beast of a pump.

I do both, I have a large closed loop, and ran out of room to add another large sequence pump and all the associated pipes, manifold e.t.c They are great and i would never get rid of mine, but my 2 new Tunze 6200's kick arse. It a perfect combo, I dont like having those big ole Ph's in the tank but they produce an amazing amount of flow for a tiny bit of power usage.

I think this product will help CL. Low wattage, low profile, can be hooked inline, alternating, cheap, high flow.... only thing is it's a new product. Just need to wait for its release.

On my second tank build, i went with the tunze on a controller. I like it as well as my last closed loop. I dont like the darn things in my tank, but the fish and coral seem to love the random flow.

Does anyone know how the polario is going to work inline?

Another loop fan.
2 loops in my 180.
Great way to get flow and eliminate dead spots.
Everything is hidden.

im too lazy to read all the post, but another 2 cents. I saw about dispersed flow. if you use a larger adaptor at the end say from 3/4 to 1" pvc adaptor i think its pretty wide flow, if you want it to have a jet stream make the and smaller. thats what i do, my opinion.

for the strainer in the intake. yeah i must agree its ugly. i use a mes net with an O-ring. and cut the rest off. paint the pvc purple or black. or let it grow some coraline.

if your fish are happy and dancing for you, and all your corals are posing, it should take your eyes away from the little strainers and small imperfections.

ok time to keep reading the post.

closed loops are great.power heads put an electrical time bomb in your tank and look like crap hanging all over the tank. imo

I love my closed loop. In an 18" front to back tank, there was just no room for Tunze like pumps. However, I would stress that if I had to do it again, I'd add an OM so I could get away with a smaller pump.

I'm also one that hates the look of powerheads and cords in my tank. I built an over the top CL and it works great, almost too great! I had to back it down to keep the sand on the bottom!

I just replaced my powerheads with a CL. I don't like the look of Powerheads either. The CL came out real nice. I wish I had a little more flow though.

I most likely will put a CL on my next tank.

I like the wide flow patterns of the Maxi-mod or the new Hydor. Difficult to beat the price and performance of those. Granted, my Maxi-mod is an eyesore compared to a good closed loop system.

Have you ever talked with Paul at OM?? What a neat guy.. the video there is just him playing around with a variable flow directional dodad.. his words not mine...lol

He basically putters around with a bunch of stuff just to see what happens. I spent over 90 mins on the phone with him once designing the flow patterns of my new tank.. what a hoot.

I've got one of those ecotec magnet pumps. It works with a magnet through the glass-no cords in the tank. It's a good option if you want a clean look and don't want to drill you tank.
