View Full Version : Who has a French Angelfish?

Gordonious

I am trying to find other owners of French Angelfish(Pomacanthus paru). I have one now that will probably soon be housed with a moray eel and I was curious as to who else out there actually owns one and what they are housing theres with. I have probably heard of only a handful of people keeping them in the past and all of them either didn't know how big they got or just planned on taking them back to the LFS when they got to big(which I think is a poor practice).

NOTE: PLEASE do not debate with me in this thread about keeping these animals in captivity. If you want to you can send me a PM(Private message).

I used to own one. Had him for 3-4 years. What a wonderful fish.
Had him from when he was juvi at 4" until he became adult coloration and was 12" long.

I had to sell him, due to his size, to a dude with a 440 gallon tank.

Sorry, forgot to answer your other questions.

He was housed with a large Emperor angel, large vlamingii tang and a few small fish (chromis and such)

I was thinking a tang may be the way to go. Chromis might just be a snack for the eel though. Thanks for your response. Is this person on RC at all?

I used to keep one when I worked at the zoo. It was in a tank that was about the size of a decent sized bathroom with a Large Green Moray, a good sized batfish, 3 nurse sharks, adult sergent majors and a good sized assortment of Monos and a scat. French angels are great fish and if you get a healthy one they are tough as nails.

I just typed in green moray and this image looks it may be the tank it was in.

Mine is about 13 inches long and he is in with a White Mouth EEL and other angels and tangs and triggers no problems here.

Here he is.

Awesome. Thank you so much everyone. I was a bit scared and wanted to be cautious. My gf was also a bit scared and she would be as heart broken as me if anything happened to my angel or if it was mean or hurt anyone. She loves the little guy. Last time she came over she said to me, "I've always wanted to read in and pet it, like it's a dog or something". Meanwhile it's getting super hyper saying hi to her and begging for food. I swear I feed the thing at least 6 times a day and it never turns down a bite.

I have an 8 inch frecnh with a few angels and a bunch of tangs. One thing I can say to summarize this fish is eating machine. this fish will honestly never stop eating. It can gobble down whole sheets of seaweed from Ocean nutrition. it does chase the smaller angels but only to get them to stay away from him then he goes back to his own buisness. He gets along best with the Queen angel, both are carribean fish and so they seem to do well together

that's funny I thought those two were supposed to be bad together.

No feedback on the achilles? What does everyone think about a Purple Tang - Zebrasoma xanthurus in the mix?

I have a 5 inch french juv just starting transition. I got him when he was 2inch. One of my favs. His tanks mates are a large majestic, med flagin, med emperor, small singapor, tiny queen, regal tang, large sailfin tang, a med Achillies, moorish idol, mandrine, lawnmower blenny and a mate pair of Maroon clowns. All doing great. Never have a problem with any Angel Aggression and to note, these are are in my reef tank.

Gordonious

Watch the French when it gets older and your corals. Personality and huger is bound to change. How do you like the Achilles? Any estimate to it's size?

I choose my corals accordingly to my fish. I had mostly SPSs, but lost them to a srew up with salinty and stopping a carbon source. But all fish where fine. I am temping a few lps's The fish also get feed small amounts of food serval times a day plus nori. So far so good with the Angles. My Achillies is about 6 inches.

Based on the temperment and personalities of the animals what size Achillies would you recommend for a tank with a 4'' French Angel?

MadZ
02/23/2007, 02:07 PM
Hi all i have a 3 1/2 inch french that gets along well with the rest of the gang ie. 4 1/2"arabian angel, 4 1/2"king angel, 3"blueface angel and some other smaller fishes like the orchid dottyback, red wrasse, tomini tang, fire clown, damsel, algae blenny, orange spotted blenny, royal gamma and a longnose hawkfish. They all get along peacefully in a 100gallon tank 4x2x2. I guess it is all about the order that you intoduce them, and well quarantined fishes makes happy fishes. Just my 2 cents worth of thoughts. Ta....

The qt part and all of the trouble with introducing a new animal is why I jumped when a reef cub member said he was going to sell his live stock including a nice tag. He has had it a while and his tank is doing very well. It is about the same size as my French so it will go in first.

MadZ I am sure one advatnge you have is numbers. I am starting to think about adding more and more fish. a bully in with two tank mates can do more damage then it would be able to do if it had ten tank mates it felt it had to pick on.

clekchau
02/23/2007, 03:09 PM
i wouldn't take the african cichlid "lockerroom" approach, some people pull it off but it's rare

Gordonious
02/23/2007, 05:35 PM
I won't go to the extreme, but I'm thinking 3 might be a little too little. Especially since the eel will sit at the bottom, so the only ones constantly swimming will be the eel and the tang.

MadZ
02/24/2007, 01:51 AM
Gordonious....my advise is for you to try if possible to add more fishes in your tank so as to distract your tank #1 bully from just picking on one or two in particular. Yes my french nowadays swims peacefully, but my arabian angel has this particular hobby at chasing my tomini tang. Otherwise they all co inside in harmony. I also have quite a good flow in my tank so if they want to attack they would have to swim real hard (harder than normal i mean lol) to get the aimed target. Slight chasing around is normal for my tank. My king used to bully everyone but now it has mellowed down. Good luck to you.

Gordonious
02/24/2007, 12:40 PM
Thanks MadZ, now I just have to find an Achillies of decent size that will fit my budget. Then consider other possible tank mates. What about a Porcupine Puffer?

Jon

MadZ
02/25/2007, 07:59 AM
porcupine puffer not recommended gordonious since if it is bullied it will puff up and release i think toxin into your tank. How about other fishes like clown trigger? Colorful fish with mad personality. But this is just my two cents worth of opinion

Soory I did not respond sooner. I will try to take a few today after work and post them.

Stocking list
small purple tang
11-12 inch French Angel
5-6 Queen Angel
5-6 Passer Angel
Pair of blue jaw triggers
Hawian Black Trigger
8 inch red crois wrasse
8-9 porkypine puffer
5-6 inch sohal tang
White mouth eel
mexican Dragon eel

in a about 3 month I should have a 560 gallon tank set up to move all these fish into. I can not wait till then.

mistergn10 has a puffer. I think the chance of them releasing any toxins into the tank is pretty minimal, but I could be wrong. Smaller box fish I think are more likely and they usually have to be pushed pretty far to do that. My gf keeps pushing for a dogface... They are so ugly!

My stock list:

French Angel about 10"-11" (got it at about 2" about 6 years back)
Maculosis Angel 8"
Bi Color Angel
Flame Hawk
Blue Jaw Trigger
Purple Tang
2 Green Chromis
Some type of black colored damsel (that a friend had and couldn't get rid of)

The French has always been my favorite marine angel (if it wasn't I would have taken that bully eating machine out a long time ago)

Most likely your bluejaw will eat the chromis and any others that are small. I think you may be happier with the look of a school of Chromis, say 8-10 instead of the trigger

Two people with purple tangs and French Angels, that's a good sign. I wonder if anyone has had an Achillies in with one. My gf is tempting me with the dogface saying she will pay for it, but I know she can't afford it.

Mar:rollface:

They have been together for 2 years. The chromis are about 2" and the Blue Jaw about 4". I have found that the Blue Jaw is very possibly one of the most docile triggers out there. That is not to say any trigger when hungry might pound whatever it sees but he is fed well with Krill and Form 1. The only real bullies in the tank are the french and Flame hawk.

I should have added this to the post above:

The introduction of the purple tang was a bit shaky. He did not back down from the French and for a few minutes I thought I might have made a disasterous mistake. After the sand settled the pecking order was reaffirmed and all has been quiet since. That was about 6 months ago.

Gordonious

You think it will be much better if I put the purple in first? That was the plan. I am thinking about adding more LR now to give things a chance to get away from each other and hide.

I have found that concerning Angels visual barriers helps with any aggression issue. In your case. I'd go with the More Live Rock first.

I have quarantined a porcupine puffer and had the eel in the system for a while. The purple tang is still to come. I was thinking of moving the puffer into my main display because it has been in qt for several weeks now and I am worried about the water chemistry in the little qt(20g).

Do you think the puffer will bother the snowflake out of boredom if it is just the two of them in the 75g tank?
