View Full Version : Too much light for coralline?

In my 550l reef I have 8 x T5 54W lights. I see on the upper side of all my LR the colour is almost white - but on the sides and in my refugium I have tons and tons of pink coralline algae. I know my alk/calcium is not always sky high, but the huge amount of coralline I do have in the semi-shade suggests that alk/calcium is not an issue.

Is the reason I do not see lots of pink coralline on top of my LR due to bleaching (too much light)?

Im guessing that's around 145g american
But and I may be wrong but sounds like you have got better light in your fuge then your display at what my calcs say are 2.97w per gal in your display
just a thought

To little light in the display is my opinion.

Are you sure? My acropora and clams are growling like weed. In the main display like I said on the sides of the LR where there is *less* light the coralline is also growling like weed - and it has almost covered the back glass pane.

I would say that there is definatly at least enough light. You should try to get your calcium up around 400, for both the corraliane and your sps/clams. what is your calcium, alk and mag levels?

I had a tank set up under pc's a few years ago...coraline everwhere. Now I have mh/t5 and it doesnt grow as much. So I think that too much light = slower growth

The alk/calc levels are about 7dKH and 400mg/L. But like I say - I have LOTS of coralline algae... Just not directly under the light.

The light is not causing your problem. What it is for sure I don't know but it does not take a lot of light to grow coralline and I have never seen to much cause a problem. BTW I would up the Alk to at least 8dkh.

I have 1200 watts (HQI)over my tank and coraline grows everywhere... I honestly do not like it... takes away from the beauty of the rock IMO...
