I am moving from a 55 that has been set up for 2+years to a 75 with a 30 gallon sump and was wondering if I could use all new water or if I have to use some of the old water from the 55. I have around 100 pounds of live rock and am using new sand. In the 55 there are a few corals such as Xenia, star polyps, mushroom etc...... Also an anenome and 4 fish. If I could get away with all new water without hurting anything I would prefer that as it would make the move so much easier. Any thoughts???

Hi Scott,

All new water is just fine. All the bugs on that LR will seed it in a jiffy and, contrary to popular belief, there are really very few bacteria swimming around in the water column.

Thanks waterkeeper so it would be ok to use all new water and move everything directly from the 55 over to the new tank???

Sure, that is not a problem. Just make sure the new tank is the same salinity and temp as the old one.

I moved a 125 gal. in oct last year & replaced all of the water with no problems. Like he said make sure the parameters are close.

My problem came in stirring up the old sand bed & released a ton of nitrates........so new sand is a great idea.
