So, I read through a few threads on this forum, and there isn't a lot of talk about good LFSes in Davis. What's the deal? I am a student here, without a car; it would be great to know if there was a good LFS within biking distance.
Thanks

Hey Chia
There isn't real talk about Davis LFS because the only one that offers any saltwater fishes is Petco, at the college square. But I've found a lot of there stuff aren't well taken care of...in my opinion.
Theres another petshop in South Davis, around Mace, next to Guadajaras, that has a tank but doesn't sell anything.
So basically, that's why... thats why the best places are in Sacramento or local reefers.

The reason why there isn't a lot of talk about good LFS in Davis is because there aren't any good LFS in Davis. For small quick purchases - you can use Petco. Pet Cetra on 616 4th Street - but they have even less than Petco. To get a decent LFS - you will have to head into Sacramento.

Hmm... sounds like an interesting business opportunity. i have met many folks here off RC in Davis, and given the atmosphere of the town, I am really surprised there is not a better representation of LFS.

There's also the down town pet shop on 4th between D and F. They have some saltwater fish sometimes. If you tell them what you're looking for, they may be able to pick it up at the wholesaler.

I'll have to try that downtown pet shop though.

I go to Petcetera all the time. Bonuses: They have frozen mysis (not a great brand like PE, but it's decent), they have live ghost shrimp (for those hard to feed carnivores), live brine (good to get finicky fish to start eating until you can wean them onto mysids), and DTs live phytoplankton. Unless things have changed recently PetCo and Animal Kingdom (the one in south Davis) do NOT offer any of these. In addition, PetCo is where the Demon in control of inflicting pain and suffering on animals resides. Literally.
Petcetera has, I'll be honest, really janky SW tanks. They use airstone driven undergravel filters. However, if you need to get a particular fish you can ask Ron to special order it for you and pick it up still in the bag. He's good about getting it and calling promptly, and the price is always fair. It would be particularly important to QT said fish. Do not even bother trying to talk to Peggy about it, Ron's wife/co-owner, unless you are a regular customer. She's a crazy bat wench from hell to people who might even seem like newbies. Just wait until you see Ron, and keep away from the parrot.
ACE Hardware also carries some SW dry goods, although no livestock anymore. They are cheaper than Petcetera on things like salt and filters, and if you're putting together any kind of fish tank you're bound to have to cart your arse in there for some gear anyhow. Saves you a trip. There's a guy in the fish section named Doug with a goatee and long curly dark hair (about 40 or so) who can offer some great advice on plumbing, flow, etc., even on saltwater tanks.
HTH,
Juan.
