I'm sure a bunch of you know about the frag mags at http://www.aqua-mags.com/

I also know a couple people make homemade ones.

Anybody have a DIY in making these? I'm interested.

Thanks

casting resin and rare earth magnets (with a min of 29lb force pull)

works great ;)

Which rare Earth metals?

I was nervous about trying them since some types rust. I'm assuming that your talking about encasing the magnet in resin to prevent this. What type of resin have you used? I'd think fiberglass resin would work....just wondering.

I want to build individual ones to plact individual frags of sps to make them look like them grow out of the back of the tank, not for a frag rack.

Thanks -mike

I took a look at the frag-mag and it seems to me that it would just be easier to buy a few. Trying to make a reef safe magnetic plug just won't be worth the hassle.

They ain't all that cheap. Encasing a magnet with resin wouldn't be hard at all. Making a fake rock to attach it to would be fun and you could be a lot more discerning in the shape you chose to create it. Theirs doesn't look all that hot to me.

That casting resin would work?

Or would these work fine since they're already coated?

Im buying some of those.. you dont need to do anything to them. Maybe add some super glue to the surface and dip it in sand to make it look more natural. 3.00 for a pair of them, does get a little pricey though.

That's a lot cheaper than $12 for 3 of the pre-made ones!:D

I have (I think) 1/2" glass Maybe larger. I may need to double up the magnets.

The coating on the K&J neo's is extremely thin and chips VERY easily. You will need to encapsulate them in something.. Just my 2 cents... No matter which way you go, from Aqua-mags or DIY, Frag-mags are awesome!

I think I'll but the K & J Mags and just smear some silicon over the whole thing. It'll add a good barrier I think.

I have done the silicone puck thing before... had to make feet for something, so I took the ends off of a 10oz silicone tube and let it dry out. Sliced the silicone up after a week and I had little hockey-pucks of silicone to work with.

I suppose if you made a mold, you could stick the magnet in the mold and even put some rock/sand on the outside of the silicone in the process...

I like it!!! I wasnt thinking too much of it, but perhaps this weekend I should make some with black silicone.

there are epoxy-coated neo magnets on ebay for pennies. just superglue one to your frag plug
