Luckily I was home when this happened but wanted others to be aware. I run those 6" clip on fans in my sump and open them up and clean them real good every 2 months or so. Never had a problem till I smelled melting plastic today and saw black smoke blowing out the back of my stand.

The fans switch looks like it overheated and then caught fire. This in turn started burning the inside of the fan up in the process. The bad thing was the fan never lost power and the air flow was feeding it making it worse. If it wasn't for frags I was acclimating today I probably wouldn't have been paying much attention to the tank.

Keep an eye on the fans and see if they are getting warm. Like I said I take mine apart and clean them and put a drop of oil on the fan motor every 2 mths and never saw this coming.

All the more reason to have GFCI circuits and ground probes in your tanks. Glad you caught it! I had an outlet strip and tier go up in flames while the wife and I just happened to be in the same room watching TV. Scared the begeezus out of me.
