What is the best way to avoid a spill when you disconnect an external recirculating skimmer from the overflow for maintenance?

I plan to use removable vinyl tubing for the exhaust but I am uncertain about how to plumb the overflow to the skimmer:
• Should I place a “drip loop” between the valve and the skimmer that “dips” into the sump?
• Should I place a union or “John Guest” connector at the low point of the “drip loop”?
• Is the inlet of the skimmer long enough to reach over the rim of the sump tank?
• Should I disconnect the vinyl tube near the overflow valve and let the tube drain into the sump?
Thanks for your suggestions.
