I was wondering what the best external pump would be for a 90G AGA with one return. I am looking to minimize heat transfer and noise.

Thanks

What kind of flow are you after?

Eheim 1262, not much can compete with it in that flow range. Maybe OceanRunner 3500, but it won't push as much water or live as long. Another choice might be the Hydor Seltz L45, a very good pump for the $$$.

I have an Iwaki MD-30RXT that produces 900-1000 gph in my 75g+29g system. The pump and overflow noise is too high. I suspect that the sump turbulence reduces my skimming efficiency.

I plan to replace the pump with a smaller Iwaki MD-20RXT and use Vortech propellers to make up the flow loss. Hopefully, this will reduce noise and improve skimming.

As much as I like Eheim, it is not a real external pump and is water cooled. I would not use that large a pump for a return on a 90G either. To minimize heat transfer, you want an air cooled external. I would use a pump more like the 20RXT posted above, or a Panworld 40PX or 50PX.

I have 3 panworlds 40s on a 125. One as a return, one to run the skimmer, and one for the chiller and closed loop. They have all be running strong since day 1. They arent as quiet as the 1262 because they are fan cooled.

I dont see anything wrong with runnint the Eheim 1262 inline as they dont run hot to begain with....I am planning to use a 1262 as a CL with an Ocean Motion on another tank.

The Eheim is still a water cooled pump. It will add heat to the water as do all water cooled pumps. Water cooled pumps (good ones) are quieter since they dont have fans. For a 90G return, Id use a 1260.

 Well he did ask for 900-1000

I'd agree, no reason to go that high on a 90.....but then I'm a lower flow is better type.

FWIW - I had a GenX-Mak4 on my tank & when I replaced it with a 1262 the tank temp dropped by a degree. Even though it's water cooled more of the energy is used to move water, seems to add next to nothing to the tank.................but then there's the whole 140w vs 80w "thing" :)

Yeah, I never recommend large return pumps. I ran a 1260 on my 90G and thought it was a really good match. 1262 would be too much flow and likely more than a single overflow could handle anyway.

FWIW, I'm running a Mak-4 on my current setup as a basement return pump. Measured draw is 110W. Seems like a good pump, noisy, but since its in the basement, I dont care.

Whether energy is used to move water or heat the pump doesnt matter, all of those 80w turn into heat. (via friction) Its still an 80w pump, and is going to give a significant amount of heat.

Was your GenX inside your stand? Using an external inside a stand pretty much defeats the purpose of using an external in the first place.

I've alway run my ehiems externally - always.

Sounds like my OceanLights ballasts, noisy but they're in another room so who cares

No, the sump isn't even in the stand.

pjf Going with the Vortech for added flow is a great addition have been using one since December and the thing rocks. I may add another on and take out my maxijet mods.
