Unfortunately the search feature isn't working at the moment. I'm looking for recommendations on a return pump for a basement sump. The tank is planned to be 150-175g without a huge bioload. Most flow will be provided either by a closed loop or high flow powerheads. The pump will have to be able to handle about 10-12' of head. I'd also like to keep the amps I'm pulling, and the noise down as much as possible.

Has anyone had success in doign something similar, or am I staring at least 150+ watts in the face? These days every watt counts. I can probably afford the electricity (what's 50 watts after all ?!?!) , but I'm trying to be as "green" as possible as well!

I use a Gen-X Mak4. It uses 110W. Works great, but is not quiet. In my case, I dont care about noise in the basement.

I have a sequence Wahoo pump I have been very happy with it. Sounds like a desk fan.

I second the sequence Wahoo.

Wow, I read that the Wahoo draws 265 watts. Is that correct?

do they make a genx 5?

at 12 feet it uses 195 watts less wattage at 10 feet.

I have the panworld 200ps to pump 14 ft. head on a 215gal tank, it's a nice quiet pump.

I actually have it on a ball valve throttled back b/c wide open is too much flow.

I would suggest the panworld 150ps for your situation (or mine as a do over) = 1100gph at 28 ft. @ 180 Watts , also much less power usage if throttled back.

To get the savings over the advertised wattage, do you throttle back the input or the output of the pump. I recall that doing one was bad for the pump, but at the moment, I forget which!

Not all pumps are not designed to be throttled. The sequence reeflo series is and the Ampmasters are after that I don't know of any other models that are designed for it.

I'm using an Iwaki MD40RLT at 10' head. It's quiet and reliable.

Always the output.

Mag 24 submerged.
Not, the quietest, but not bad. I'm turning 1200gph on the tank upstairs and bleeding the rest of the pressure into a frag tank for approx 400-500gph. It ran louder when I tried throttling back the output, so I either bleed the extra to the frag tank or looped back into the other end of the sump/fuge.

I wish I had drilled the sump and used an Iwaki externally...maybe on the next go round.

Another happy panworld user. I run the 200ps that is throttled back and as rxinc suggested, the 150ps would be a good choice for you.

I use the Japanese made Iwaki pumps for return and Sequence brand for closed loops. You get what you pay for the Iwaki pumps as long as you stay with the Japanese made versions.

i have a friend with a 180 and a sequence baracuda for return pump from basement, it's throttled back a little with a valve, and it's super quiet.

I'm running a Iwaki MD70RLT, probably getting 1000gph with a current draw of 2 amps. Sound level is ~70 dB from about a foot away.

Here's a good list with with watts indicated pumps (http://reefs.org/library/pumps)
