now i need help with making the purchase of "lime" for a homemade limewater. But i went to the stores and didnt even know what i was really looking for. Ive read the links for limewater but dont know anything about making the purchase a correct one. Now the store have one the says for "canning" and "pickling fruits or veggies". Is that what im supposed to get?

Can i get some ideas on what to ask/look for? May be some pics?

If Wal-Mart doesn't have it, maybe try another store?

Thats what i tried and none of them have it. See my big question is what do i look for meaning if there is no Mrs. Wages, Then i can look for another brand maybe? But what do i read for? What should the labels say.?

I would think the common thing to look for is Pickling Lime, or maybe calcium hydroxide. I got my last stock in a 50lb bag, but maybe somebody else will chime in on an alternative brand.

I have not found it in any store in Fl. Publix used to have the Balls brand but that is no longer made.

Either get the Mrs Wages online or just wait for it to go on sale at Drs FS or some other online store. I got some TLF brand fairly reasonable. Not as cheap as a 50lb bag but I do not use that much.

The best place to check for the stuff is a local independent grocery store. Most of your big chains have cut canning supplies drastically in the last few years, not much call for it anymore.

Ordering it off of their website is not bad. I paid 2.75 for a jar in the store and they want 3.85 online with shipping and all. That would probably be a lot easier than calling every store in town.

Also, depending on the size of your tank, one jar will last a while.

there is a thing called hydrated lime. (been using it for 8 years) my local feed and seed sells it .7$ for a 50lb sack. just make sure it it water treatment grade. Im sure someone will say its got impurities and is not safe. but....after 8 yaers of use dont you think I would have seen some bad results from its use? It is plain and simple calcium hydroxide.I wouldnt be surprized if Kent marine dosnt just put this in their own packaging and marks the price up up up:D

I discuss grades in the article below, and a water treatment grade is likely OK. Some of the hobby brands claim to meet that standard as well, although food grade is a bit stricter.

I was thinking this was a good option for me at first, then i found it locally at half the cost of what it would have cost there after shipping per case.

Sounds like Randy says the food grade is the most pure and therfore in my mind would be better for the reef use, altho others grades will work. After taking in everything Randy says about lime, im going to stop using my bulk Kalkwasser (probally just hydrated lime) and use good ole mrs. w.
