Anyone know what this little, about 1-2 cm, starfish is? It's white. I saw it climbing on a rock and I removed it from the tank. Is it a harmful creature? Nonharmful?

I've heard various things, but pretty sure they're not harmful. I have hundreds, (yes, hundreds) in my tank.

could be astrina or a mini brittle star

A picture or description would help. If it has fat uneven legs usually in an odd number its probably an asterina. If it has slender legs and moves a little more quickly its probably a mini brittle star.
Asterinas are iffy and have been known to damage some corals and mini brittles are very desirable.

I have a bunch of those guys too. I've heard and read that some eat algae and are harmless, and others (different species I guess) eat SPS corals and are...well...bad. Mine haven't bothered anything, though I only have one SPS- a volunteer, and it's fine too. It'd be more of a drag to try to get rid of all of them than just learn to live with them because their reproduction is rediculously successful in my tank.

If they're asterina stars they seem to like algae alot more than anything else. They gravitate towards the patches of algae on my glass something feirce. I only keep soft corals though so I cannot attest to sps.

I have 2 of the asterina stars ( I think) The first time I saw them they were the size of my pinkie nail, now they are the size of my thumb nail. I think about 4-6 months passed for them to grow to the thumb nail size, but I don't see them that often.

Looks just like the Astrena. I'll have to read up on it.

If I've found one, I probably have more -- si or no???

I have a whole ****load of them. In all my tanks. They will drop a leg off and that will become a new starfish. I dont mind them in my other tanks but I am in the process of getting rid of them in my 55g. They are eating my coralline and are always on my zoanthids causing them to stay closed. I have hundreds. My 2 Harlequin shrimp are doing a good job so far but they are still everywhere. For the most part they are harmless aglae grazers but in certain situations. Also there are a lot of different species so just watch over them.
