Hey everyone. My 50 gallon FOWLR tank finished cycling about two weeks ago. Right now all I have in there is a damsel and my clean-up-crew. Anyways, I was planning on getting a new fish sometime this week. I want one that is vibrant and will add lots of color. Any suggestions without breaking the bank? How about a foxface?

Thanks for any input:)

I think a foxface will require larger tanks because they can get pretty big. How about gobies? They entertaining to watch. Most colorful fish I've seen that I liked are wrasses and mandarin dragonet.

Tank needs to be "old" for a manderin, but a carpenter's fairy wrasse is a real beauty. Also a coral beauty angel would be cool.

I wouldnt recommend a dragonet since his tank is still very new. It will only end up starving. If you like the dragonets look at getting one a year from now. Let your pod population develope and maybe add a small refugium.

coral beauty angels or flame angels are nice, fairly inexpensive, not to fussy but can't seem to get along with their own kind. A mandarin I wouldn't recommend in a new tank because they feed almost exclusivly on copods. The foxface will get too large for a 50 and they can become destructive as they age....cheers

ok wow. Thanks everyone for the quick responses...

About the gobies... I have a crushed coral base, and they won't be bothered by that, would they? Also, I want an active fish and don't the gobies like to hide?

A coral beauty or flame angel. I reaaly like the flame angels and may consider one of those guys. I like them. They just seem kind of typical, but I really like them. What type of diet do those guys have? I have the formula two frozen stuff, would that work?

Of course I know not to get a mandarin at this point. However, I would like to get one of those in time. I might put a sump/refugium under my tank soon so I think that would help the copepods:)

I like the hawkfish, but I have heard that they eat shrimp. Later I would like to get some claner shrimp and stuff so that may not work out...

Before you jump in and buy another fish you should consider doing a little research on quarantine procedures. Even if you don't do a full-blown qt procedure, you will learn a lot of tips that could keep you from killing off all your fish when you add one with ich.

Thanks for the tip, n8ster. While talking about QT, i had a question. Could I just buy one of those 2 gallon goldfish kits for $20 and use that as QT??

be also aware that as colorful as wrasses are if you do not have a cover of sorts on the top of your tank you will be really risking the chance of them jumping out of your tank (have lost two)

Here is a good reference for QT setups.

You might want to go larger than 2 gallons--with smaller tanks the water gets polluted more quickly, so you have to be more diligent about water changes, etc..

I personaly like royal grammas. They have nice colors and stay fairly small.

I have a pink and blue spotted goby. He is a very pretty fish, and he is very active and lots of fun to watch.
