I am in the process of taking down my large 225gal tank, but am going to keep a small 65gal RR tank going so I don't go into withdrawals. :):)

Anyway, I am planning on using a standard 20gal tank that I had sitting around for the sump.

I need a descent skimmer that would handle that volume and a fairly medium bio-load.

I would like to conserver as much space as possible, but don't want to get too small of a skimmer.

I love the Octopus skimmer as that's what I used on my big tank.

Would a OCT NW110 handle this small system ok?
I like the size of it and it's only about $115 brand new.

Anybody got any suggestions? I really don't want to spend more than about $150, so I'm on a budget.
No Deltec recommendations please!!! :)

I think I would go for the bigger Octopus 150 or an ER RS80

Thanks for the input guys--my plan was to have a small fuge section with chaeto.
If I do the larger NW150 or ER RS80--I wouldn't have room for a fuge section.
Not sure which would benefit more--larger skimmer or a fuge section?
Any thoughts?

hellolights.com has decent price on the asm g1-x right now.

the nw110 would be fine, but for the small cost difference the nw150 would be better, it all depends on the room. Either would be more than enough for a 65 gallon tank!

I'd rather have the bigger skimmer. A fuge needs to be decent size to really do some good.

sjm817--so you don't think a 20gal tank would be able to accomodate a big enough fuge to do any good?
I was just thinking of having a partition with some LR and chaeto.
What do you think?
Will a 20gal tank be big enough for a 65gal tank?

20G is pretty small. 20L, or 20H? Typically, a sump is ~ 1/3 the size of the display, so you are right there. I just think a more powerful skimmer will do more to keep the tank clean than a small fuge. I've seen some "expert" posts that say a fuge must be pretty large to do anything substantial. What size fuge are you planning?

I agree....i run an oversized skimmer and no fuge as i didn't feel the space provided in my 20H sump would be big enough to be beneficial enough.

It's a standard 20H. I was just planning to put in a couple baffles for a fuge section. Hadn't really sized the section yet.
The size of the fuge section is totally dependent on how big the skimmer is.
I'm really leaning toward the NW150 as it's only $30 more.

Basically I need to fit the skimmer, a heater, and a small Quiet One 3000 return pump.

I'm starting to think a fuge section may not be worth it?

thanks

In a 24" sump, you dont have much to work with, Once you get the skimmer, return sections and a couple of baffles, there isn't much room left.

Well--I just placed the order for the NW150 from Octopusskimmer.com.
I'm just going to forget having a fuge section. It will keep the sump cleaner anyway. :0

Thanks for all the input guys. :)

Here is another thought. If you use an external pump, maybe you could still squeeze in a fuge section?

I thought of that--but i really don't want to take a chance on drilling this small tank--I have a feeling it's tempered.
Thanks for the thought.

hellolights.com has decent price on the asm g1-x right now.

And every single one of the other skimmers in this thread will outskim a G1-x by a large margin, and are cheaper.

Rich--I agree--my NW200 that I had on my 225gal tank did a phenomonal job. Another reason I wanted to stay with the Octopus skimmers.
