the quietest external is the velocity but it will heat your tank and boil your fish and coral's

I had one and it raised the water temp by 2f, nothing close to boiling your fish or coral.
If you want the quietest extrenal pump you will never beat the T4 pumps, but for external Ehiem all the way.

Try an eheim 1250. Very quiet. You need to make sure it doesn't bump up against the glass in the sump. I glued some rubber suction cups to the bottom of mine. Very quiet...

Agree with all the above. The velocities are extremely quiet but can add temp to the tank. It does not have a fan in the motor housing and uses the water it is circulating to cool the motor. Depending on the size of the system you are running, heat can become an issue. Eheims are well known and respected in the hobby, very consistent and proven. They are pretty darned quiet too. On your 40, I'd recommend the Eheim.

I love my eheim 1260, in sump. Very quiet, and pretty energy/heat efficient too!

The 1250 would give you about 160 gph at 4' of head. The 1260 is probably closer to 400 or so gph at 4' of head. I used to use a 1250 as the return pump on my 90, so a 1250 should be fine.

Depends on what you want to keep and what turnover you want.
I have an eheim(so quiet)
I would get that or an Oceanrunner(which is on sale right now fostersmith, killer deal)
Both very quiet, cool.
