Has anyone used Quickcrete QuickCure Cement? Its white and has little pieces of fiberglass in it. Sold at Home Depot. I was wondering if this stuff would be safe to use in a reef tank? Meaning would the pieces of fiberglass hurt anything. I'm thinking they would be sealed into the rock. This stuff is white, so I would really like to use this instead of regular Portland. Thanks!
Quick cure cements usally have chemical additives which excelerate the reaction. More worryingly "Portland cement clinker is at least two-thirds by mass of calcium silicates (3CaO.SiO2 and 2CaO.SiO2), the remainder consisting of aluminium- and iron-containing clinker phases and other compounds. The ratio of CaO to SiO2 shall not be less than 2.0. The magnesium content (MgO) shall not exceed 5.0% by mass". Obvoiusly the metals dont make it the most desirable thing to use in an aquruim (in any form it may come in) as they will leach into the water. I have however seen people use it and seal it with commonly availble pool sealants. I cant really surrgest good building materails if your looking for a safe adhesive for sticking rocks together go for Silicone rubber (Bathroom Sealant) but make sure it does not contain the antibacterial agent that is now commonly used in sealants. Another thing you could try is a Modeling putty called miliput I have seen that used before and it seems to be safe but is expensive. I can not however say that i have ever risked using it.
