I have a couple of pendants that I want to take the guts out and build my own canopy. Do the DE's really have that much UV that I won't be able to do that?

Thanks,

Sean

I accidently left a glass shield off one of my pendants once.

fried every coral that was under it.

I did just replace my rusting sunlight supply mini pendants with these and they are excellent. Easy to mount, awesome spread and shouldn't rust.

Dr. Joshi analyzed the effect of a DE UV shield in this article: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/feb2004/feature1.htm.

The UV portion of the graph is to the left of the 400nm wavelength. In the particular sample that he chose, I'm not sure that the UV shield was doing much good other than blocking the UVB peak at 320nm.

SE bulbs have nothing to brag about. They emit UV as well: http://www.aquarium-design.com/reef/uvlighting.html.
