If I had $400ish to buy a skimmer for my 180 tank, I'd either get the reef-octo 200 or the DAS (http://stores.petorama.net/Detail.bok?no=74).

I do not know about externals, but a tunze 9010 would fit the bill.

All tunze models are in sump or in tank. That is all the models I have researched for my 180

sump is going to only have a 12"X12" or so area to fit an in sump, so if it meets those standards then, hell yeah

the tunze 9010 will fit in your sump area.

the DAS ex-2 or ex-3 would be great for that tank, i put a ex-2 on a 180g softy tank, and it rocks.
it's a deltec for all practical purposes!

but i agree that the tunze 9010 is a great skimmer, especially considering it's 5"x5" footprint.
but i think you'll get more love if you use the 2 or 3 pump DAS external skimmer.

I'd spend an extra $100 and go for the ATI BM200... most people are comparing them with Bubble King...

Also, depends on just how quiet of a skimmer you need will also dictate alot about the budget. Now with some of the mods alvailable there are a number of budget skimmers that can really perform but added noise can be the tradeoff.
