Amateur Aquarist Job Opportunity

Who: An aquarist interested in exploring research projects in reef tank science. The applicant must have some experience with maintaining a reef tank. Since this research will be conducted on a College campus, the ideal candidate will be either a College student or a mature High School student who is looking for a summer job in 2007.

What: Two projects will be investigated: (1) Quantifying the capacity of aquarium devices (carbon reactor, protein skimmers) to remove organic materials from aquarium water. (2) Studying the effect of incident light frequency on coral coloration. See http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-04/pr/index.php, for an example of the former type of project.

Where: The Chemistry Department on the campus of the Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania. Housing accommodations can be secured on-campus (http://www.hfs.psu.edu/rates/summer01.shtml). In addition, there are many opportunities to sublet apartments in State College for the summer. This latter alternative should be significantly cheaper.

When: Maximum time period: May 7 – August 17 (15 weeks). A minimum of 10 weeks is required.

Salary: $300/wk
