I bought a RBTA from LFS and he had them in pots. Do you think it will come out when ready? It has only been in my tank for 2 days. Seemed like a good idea when I bought it. They said it will help him get comfortable in my tank. I know there is not much I can do but just wait. Just wondering if anyone else has ever seen them sold like this. It was from Tropicorium, they are a very well trusted LFS in Michigan. Any comments are welcomed.

Here is a pic of it and how it is positioned in the tank.

It should, I can't see how it's getting any flow in there. Does that thing have short stubby tenticles? Hard to tell from pic. If so, it is probably hungry. Nice tank by the way!

It does have short stubby tenicles. I put some mysis in there yesterday. I couldn't really tell if it eat. Should I try again today?

It wouldn't hurt. Does the mysis stick to the tenticles? Not eating in the first few days is not something to be real concerned about (yet). It may still be getting used to it's new environment. But the food should still stick to the tenticles.

I will try a little later and let you know how it goes.

When I went to feed it, it was deflated and it looked like it's mouth was wide open. What does this mean? I put a piece of silverside on it. I think he eat some not sure.

Wide open mouth is typically a sign of an unhealthy anemone. However if the mouth is just open some and not wide open, and it's just for a short time and it was deflated, it could be nothing. Could be just expelling waste. If he was able to hold onto the silversides that is a good sign.

The first pic is what it looked like before I fed it. (sorry best I can do) The second is what it looks like now. Should I just leave it alone for a few days, or try feeding it again tommorow?

I definately wouldn't try to feed it when it's deflated like that. Hopefully it will perk up in an hour or two. You may want to try tipping that pot on it's side so it gets some flow. That may make it wander out on it's own also. My thinking on this is he may move towards the light.

I wouldn't try feeding it any more today.

I fed it a piece of formula 1 today. It stuck and he ate some. Although my shrimp got some of it. How long should it take it to eat a small piece of food? How long should I keep shrimp away?

Feed the shrimp first. I've found shrimp digging in the nem an hour later. That can't be very pleasant for the nem. You can also cover the nem with a inverted strawberry basket that you get when you purchase strawberrys. Great that it can hold onto food and is eating though!!!

Yes it is, but I tipped it sideways like you suggested.

That's a very cool idea for having BTA's in display tanks to be sold. You don't have to peel its foot off the glass or rock, you can bag it without ever taking it out of the water, and it can settle in its new home with a familiar place to start with.

If it's the Tropicorium I've heard mentioned here on RC then yes, they have a great reputation.

Your pic of the 'nem deflated didn't look to me to be anything to be alarmed about. It was either excreting waste ("pooping" to be crude ;) ) or it was exchanging water from the LFS tank with its new home. Sticky tentacles and eating are very good signs. But yeah you may want to cover it to let it eat at first until it is used to your tank. As for how long it takes them to eat, all my BTA's grab food and have it in their mouths in mere seconds. If it's taking longer than that, but it's still getting it in its mouth and *not spitting it out later* I wouldn't worry too much.

Looking forward to more pictures, looks like it is a nice 'nem. :)

It has been 5 days and it it still in the pot. I still have the pot lying down. I think it looks ok. I fed it a piece of silverside today soaked in zoe. Should I continue to wait for it to come out on its own, or maybe manual removal? It can't be getting any light in the pot. Thanks for any help.

redvipe2010

Stubborn one isn't he! Manual removal is going to be dangerous in that pot. Maybe move the pot to a different flow area, and only tip it part way so it is getting both light and flow.

He looks pretty healthy and is eating, so I think I will leave him alone. They say if they roam then they are not happy. He must be pretty happy.:D

redvipe2010

That is true about the roaming. But eventually he will want some light. Waiting is not a bad idea.

Sometimes they need to adjust to the new light as well. I got mine from a guy who has MH lighting (as do we) but we use different spectrums (I think that's the right word), and it stayed in the rocks for a few days, and slowly started exposing itself to the light. It came out a little farther for a little longer each day.
I don't know if that's what's going on with yours, but wanted to toss out the idea just in case :)
good luck and enjoy!

From the pic, I would have to guess it's hungry. The tenticles appear to be short.

I fed it a piece of formula 1 today, before the pic was taken.

redvipe2010

I have no experience feeding formula one to anemones. I typically use silversides, Rods food, and krill.

jpa0741

I have been rotating between formula1, silversides and krill.

Someone told me to hold the pot upside down and take it out of the water and let just his bubbles hang in the water. He will let go or move towards the water. Have you ever heard of this.

redvipe2010
02/09/2007, 04:57 PM
That will cause stress, and you have no guarantee that will make him move. I only take them out of when I have to, like when they are going to a new home for example.

Look who is out. :D :D :D
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e336/jpa0741/100_1466.jpg
I ended up taking the pot out to see if I could break it with out hurting him and he let go. I put him close to where he was. He moved a little last night, but looks like he has foot in there pretty could now. He is looking pretty happy. Thanks for your help redvipe2010.
