I just posted this over in the Reef Discussion forum, but I thought it would more appreciated here. Since I broke out my camera this morning, here are some other shots I took.

Here's a picture of my Purple Monster. I'm probally most proud of this coral. I grew it from a tiny frag, about a quarter inch.

The only store that I know that was selling the Purple Monster was Eric at **********. I think he lost his mother colony though, but I think he may have found a replacement colony. You should contact him directly. I think Atlantis sells frags too, but I don't know if they're available right now.

I bought my frag as part of a frag pack from a fellow RC'er. And just if you were wondering, no, I don't think I would risk fragging my colony.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't buy the PM without much experience. I think a great beginner frag would be the Bali Green Slimer or maybe a Monitpora Cap. The main thing I would do in starting out in SPS's is getting a really good skimmer, and maintaining and regularly test for pH, Ca, KH, and Mg. HTH.

I just got a PM frag yesterday, and I am very happy.. VERY hard to find this one.. I can trace this lineage to Steve Tyree's :)
I had another one I got last year from steve, but accidentally killed it.

I found a couple of old pictures of my PM. This was before my nice SLR so the PQ is really bad.

Here's the frag in January of 2006:

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a89/WayneL333/Purple-Monster-Small-6.jpg

That' still like 4 time the size of when I got the frag and it took a good 7-10 months before it got that large.

This picture was taken April 25, 2006

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a89/WayneL333/Purple-Monster-Small-5.jpg

It was a really slow grower at first, but when it got to a certain size, it just ook off.

I use Ushio 400W 20K, but before I switched to Ushio, they were XM's. I also have actnic T5 supplements. I keep the colony way up high in my tank in a high flow area. I think part of my success is attributed to my weekly 10%+ water changes and a great skimmer.

Hey Wayne,

How do you like the Ushio 400w 20k compared to the 400w XM20k?

I am running the XM's now, but am wondering about the Ushio bulbs.

BTW, how are the interruptus pair doing? Gem tang doing well too?

Great pics and that purple monster is unbelievable!

I had a question on your Cyphastrea. Where do you have it in the tank and what type of growth do you get from it? I have one and still experimenting on where I want it.

WayneL333
02/04/2007, 04:06 PM
Hey Nick,

I tried the Ushio's out because I used a BLV 14k bulb once and liked it. I hear they are the same company. Anyway, I didn't like the Ushio 20k at first because I thought the XM 20k's were bluer and I seemed to get better growth from the XM's.

But after a couple months now, I think my corals adjusted to the new Ushio's and I'm getting good growth again. I'm trying out Radium's 20k next and then deciding which bulbs to stick with.

My fish are doing well. They're one big happy family :) Hope all is well with you and your tank.

Glad everything is going well.

What ballst are you running BTW?

Let me know how you like the Radiums. I am debating if I should try another 20k bulb or stick with the XM 20k's.

Everything is going good with my tank.

dude thats the most massive growth i've ever seen of a PM frag--especially one that was only a quarter inch! Plus the fact that you're running 20k's. I would have thought that kind of growth was only possible with like 6.5k lights blasting PAR onto it :lol

What kind of flow do you have? I saw the 2 tunzes in the other thread, are they the 6200's? Do yoiu halso have a CL?

What ballast are you running BTW?

Nick, I'm running PFO SE magnetic ballasts with Lumenarc reflectors.

What kind of flow do you have? I saw the 2 tunzes in the other thread, are they the 6200's? Do yoiu halso have a CL?

They're 6100's and I don't have them running at 100%. It's too much flow and my corals don't like it. I've got them alternating between 30% to 80%.

I do have a CL. I'm using a Sequence Marlin on my CL that runs through my chiller. My main pump is a Sequence Dart.

But I'm telling you, I think the secret is a great skimmer. My Bubble King 250 ext. is awesome. I have a pretty high bio-load with all my fish. I feed them small amounts 4 times daily and I don't even bother testing my Phosphate levels anymore because I've never seen any ill-effects from it.

Yeah, Hugo, aka SniperSPS, runs only 20k's too and he had awesome growth too. I tried 10 and 14k's before, but I just couldn't stand the color. I prefer to have a great looking tank color than fast growth anyway.

Thanks again to everyone for their compliments and sorry, I don't think I would ever risk purposely fragging my PM.

Fantastic. Thanks for the thumbs up on the BK250. I had a BK300 Ext and think it might be the best NW skimmer I've ever used, and always wondered about the BK250. I'm getting a new tank soon and might consider that skimmer. I totally agree a skimmer makes color and life in general much better. ;) Do you have any pix of the 250 in action? I've only seen BK400's and 300's in person.

Thanks. I don't know if I have a secret, but getting so much growth with 20k bulbs is not the only ironic thing about my tank. My tank top is also a covered tank, i.e. non-eurobraced. I need to keep it cover because I'm worried all my fish may try to jump out.

I also have a 4 inch sandbed. I've always thought the biological benefits of a deep live sandbed as well as ample live rock outweighs the possible ill-effects of phosphate buildup.

Don't hate the reefer, hate the game :D After it reached a couple of inches and had like 4 branches, it just started shooting up. I've noticed if you just leave it alone and don't move it at all, it grows a lot more quickly.

Wayne, that is some wird growth on your sunset Looking good as always. That's a very nice grown out LE tank

Thanks Eric. That Sunset and Superman is actually overtaking and encrusting over an Orange polyp Digitata. But the Digitata is able to keep pace with their growth so they're just grower taller and taller. I can't believe I have to remount that rock they're on (It's got to be at least 8x6) to a larger rock. They're running out of rock to encrust on.

Great stuff Wayne-how much of that kent product(in the equipment pic) are you using or are you using it at all?-Joe

LOL. None of it. When I first started reefing like 6 years ago, I dosed everything under the sun. It took me awhile to realize that you didn't need 95% of the products out there. I just haven't brought myself to throw any of that stuff away because I feel like it such a waste. I've literally had that stuff for over 3 years. I think I'll actually throw it all away today. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for all the compliments.

I just switched my bulbs back to 400W XM 20k's last week. After trying everything, I decided that I liked the color of XM's the best. I got great growth and I actually had less algae growth on my tank. They're the cheapest out of the bunch I've used too.
