When a new reefer asks "How much live rock do I need" the answer is always in lbs per Gal. To me it seems the more surface area of live rock the better filtration. If you had a big rock that weight 5lbs and a rock half its size that also weight 5lbs wouldn't the bigger rock provide double the filtration even though they weigh the same.

Or am I way off on this subject?

Yes, surface area is a better measure, but there is no way of knowing the surface area of a live rock, so folks use a more readily available, if cruder estimate. :)
