Can slate be used in saltwater? It will be used as an anchor for a DIY project. If not What can I use that is only about 1 inch thick and fairly heavy? It is being used to anchor some rock pillars. (to keep them from tipping over) Thanks Chris

Don't take my word for it, but I believe slate woiuld be fine.
I have seen some of the older aquariums where the bottom was made from slate.

It will probably be fine. What you could do is put a sample in a voulme of water tested for pH and hardness, wait a day or so then test to see if the waters parameters have changed. Not a fool proof or complete method but it may give you some indication if anything will disolve out of the rock.
