I was thinking of using a 2"-3" thick bed of play sand (the cheap stuff from lowes) in the bottom of my new tank. Then cove it with some of my old sand then a bag or two of seafloor. Has anyone else done this?

It's perfectly fine.

I've seen a few systems set up with the playsand, but they all seem to be more of a brown sand rather than the nice white argonite sand.

I guess if you like the look then give it a shot

well i am puttin a 4" wide trim around the base of the tank so you will see very little of it. it will be carib sea oolitic and sea floor on top. I just want to have a deep sand bed and not spend more on sand than the tank its self.

I'm thinking about it, I saw this at lowes website.

I've also seen a thread about this sand, but I don't know where to get it, but would probably be better.

Yardright Tropical Play Sand

So if you do let me know! ;)

Did you see this little blurb on the Yard right website?

Helpful Tip. Since YardRightâ„¢ Tropical Play Sand has been purified at high temperatures before packaging, be sure to add some moisture to return it to its natural state. Moist sand makes for better sandcastles. Not suitable for aquarium systems and traction purposes.

Also, there have been reports that the Yardright stuff is very difficult to find.

the quickcrete from lowes is fine. I am doing a new tank with 2 inches of the play sand, 2 inches of southdown and one inch live southdown.

cristhiam,
how long have you used the playsand? Did you seed it with live sand?

I replaced some of my old sand with it, so far 5 - 6 months with it.

is not very white more tan looking but it doesn't bother me. You can get a whiter one from Lowes too
