First off, i'd look at your LFS, I'd also look into getting a book. The new Marine Aquarist by Paletta is a great book for beginners. I'd also do A LOT of research before starting. This hobby can be costly!! I'm IN college too and you need to realize the expenses. But if done right, then it can be done CHEAP...

Look at whether you want an all in one unit, (seach JBJ nano cube, aquapod etc.) or to buy a glass aquarium and put in the pumps etc yourself.
I went with the glass aquarium and then added my own hardware. This way you can customize and add parts that you find for cheaper prices. A lot of people seem to upgrade parts in their all in ones anyways.

I'm also a hopelessly addicted college student. You can get the all in one units like Rosseau mentioned. I personally perfer the the second route that Rosseau recommends. This way you can add equipment/upgrades as you progress. That way you don't have to spend all your money at once. I also like being able to customize the tank exactly how I want it. By far, the best way to save money is to research everything first.

I'd also say....look into a local reefing club....my first tank was used, as was some of my equipment....reefers are always changing their minds, upgrading and selling stuff....part of the addiction. And it WILL be your new ADDICTION! It's so much fun when you "get it". Good luck! Enjoy!
