I am new to the hobby, and I am wondering which salt everyone prefers and the reason why they prefer it.

I have always used Instant Ocean. That is what the LFS recommended when I first started the hobbyand I have never changed. It mixes good, has good trace elements along with calcium and have never had any negatives to cause me to think about changing.

I used to use Oceanic because it disolved so quick but now I buy pre-mixed water from my LFS and they use Tropi-Marin.

Thanks for the info. It seems that Instant Ocean is more readily available at all the major retailers and I have found some great deals on it. Is there a shelf life for it?

I use Instant Ocean with success.

In reality, I think they are likely all okay to use.

i use oceanic its only a buck more expensive than IO at my LFS

50 gallon mix = 19 dollars
90 gallon mix = 39 dollars

LFS owner wonders why no one buys the 90 gallon mix..

I use Red Sea Salt. No problems so far. Mixes well. I mainly use it because it is locally available and is only $43 for a 200 gal. bucket.

I emailed the makers of IO and heres there response:

Hello,

Some of the trace elements and minerals in the salt will begin to break down after 3 years as long as it is kept in a cool dry location. There is a production date just below the bar code but no exp. date.

I was wondering about Instant Ocean Salt, i was interested in how long can this be stored if it has an expiration date, or if it will loose its quality over time.

Thanks
Chris

Took a few days for them to email me, but nice to know.
