I have a regal tang that I have had for about 4 months. He is eating well (brime, flakes and greens) and is the king of the tank. He is in a 90 gal with a royal gramma, cleaner shrimp and 1 percula. All water reading are good. I noticed about a month ago that the top of his tail looked like it was nipped off. The tang always tries to bully the gramma but he always stands his ground. So I thought that the gramma nipped the tang but now I noticed that there is a piece missing on both the top and the bottom of the Regal tang's tail and it seems that he is also missing his spurs.
Is this fin rot? http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/142523mini-Regal-1.JPGhttp://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/142523mini-Regal-2.JPG

Hi Jafo@sea,

Welcome to RC.

I can't really see the pics up close. did the fins starts out looking a lillte ragged or anything like that?

Usually fin rot starts out with the tail looking bad then progressing to worse.

you can start an antibotic treatment with a gram negative antibotic, some thing like Maracyn 2.

A closer up pic would help too. =)

This is the best I can do. It was not easy holding the fish still against the glass to take the picture (just kidding) Thanks for the welcome. As far as I can remember, the fins did not appear damaged when I purchased him. Will the treated that you suggested effect my cleaner shrimp or my cleaning crew. I forgot to mention that I also have a sand sifting worm.

I think the best way, is when you take a plastic spatula and pin them in the cornor. (j/k)..

Its always best to treat in a QT in my opinion. I don't like treating the main tank just in case anything goes wrong or just in case the product does affect some other fish or invert.

You can aslo look into food that contains an antibotic.

Well, I do not have room or funds for a QT a this time and I have gotten threats from my wife. So I will try the food with the antibotic. Any suggestions?
